Cloverdale and Oakland

City Are People’s Choice

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Will Cloverdale or Oakland City be another Milan? Probably not, although the law of averages should be catching up for a “people’s choice” in the Indiana high school basketball tourney. “Hoosier Hysteria - 1967” is just around the comer, and the odds will be on some team like defending champ Michigan City or the tried-and-proven coaching of a veteran like Marion Crawley at Lafayette. Michigan City is riding on the crest of a 16-game perfect string

this season and a 36-game streak dating back to last year. Lafayette was overlooked in the early stages of the ratings this 1 season, but the Broncos are No. 2 in the current UPI coaches’ board ratings. But funny things can happen in Indiana basketball’s "second season”—the one that really counts. Cloverdale made it to the final foursome last year, only to lose to Indianapolis Tech. Since then the Clovers have won 18 in a row. Then there’s little Oakland

Cublets Win 2 From Spencer

Playing before the home folks broke early to have a 14-6 edge

last night, the Greencastle 8th and 9th grade basketball teams swept two games from Spencer. Jumping into a 14-4 first quarter advantage, the 8th Graders had little trouble in wrapping up the Cops, 42-29.

Scott Loring paved the way for the locals as he scored half of the Cub points. Following the lead of their younger peers, the 9th Graders

City, also perfect in 18 games. One of these smaller schools could conceivably, reach the winner’s circle in Hinkle Field House next month, but history is on the side of the big-town schools. Milan was the last “people’s choice” winner back in 1954. Before then only Wingate in 1913 and 1914 and Thomtown in 1915 had emerged from the ranks of the small-town quintets into the throne room of the IHSAA tourney. In fact, only a few small teams have reached the final game. Montmorenci did it in 1915 and Mitchell in 1940. Winaroac was runnerup in 1932. But the day of the little guy — who through consolidations isn’t so little any more—may come again soon. The little schools have won more tourneys than all the bigcity Gary Schools combined. There hasn’t been a champ from the Steel City yet. But almost anybody can win all the marbles in the big shoot. Somebody has to.

Indiana and Northwestern Favored to Win Saturday

CHICAGO UPI — The Big Ten’s pace setting basketball teams, Northwestern and Indiana, were the only favorites today for a full slate of conference contests Saturday. The Wildcats, sharing the league lead with the Hoosiers at 4-1 each, were an 11-point choice at home against defending champion Michigan, now holding ninth place with a 2-4 league mark. Indiana, also at home, was an 8-point choice to drop Wisconsin, which boasts a 2-3 record in league play to date to share sixth place. The other three conference games, Illinois at Minnesota, Michigan State at Purdue and Iowa at Ohio State, were classed as even and so was the encounter of Houston at Notre Dame. The lowa-Ohio State match, on the Game of the Week television show, could be the best spectacle of the day since the Hawkeyes boast the league leading scorer in Sam Williams and the Buckeyes one of the two best rebounders in Bill Hosket. Williams, who tallied 35 points against Illinois Tuesday to help lift the Hawkeyes into a third

place tie with Michigan State with a 3-2 conference record, has averaged 29 points per game in Big Ten play for a solid lead on the field.

Hosket, fourth in league scoring with a 23.3 point per game average, has the best field goal accuracy of the leading individuals, hitting on 53.8 per cent of his shots, and has pulled in 14.2 rebounds per game to tie for the individual lead.

Michigan will be aiming for revenge on Northwestern as well as attempting to move toward the first division. The Wildcats posted a 93-73 decision at Michigan in an earlier meeting— Northwestern’s only victory on the road in conference play.

Indiana, victor twice on the road in conference competition, has the league’s best season record, 11-4, compared to Wisconsin’s 7-8 for the season and 2-3 in the conference.

Home teams have won 18 of the 27 games played thus far in the Big Ten, helping to account for the even odds on Illinois’ trip to Minnesota since the mini have a 9-7 record compared to 5-11 for the Gophers.

LAFAYETTE. UPI — For mer Lebanon High School sensation Rick Mount scored 47 points Thursday night to lead the Purdue freshman basketball team to a 102-77 victory over St. Joseph’s freshmen.

Mount hit 16 of 27 from the field and 15 of 16 at the free throw stripe. The Purdue freshmen are 7-1, losing only to the varsity.

Purdue Players To be Honored

LAFAYETTE UPI — United Press International honors two members of Purdue’s Rose Bowl football champions Saturday— quarterback Bob Griese and tackle Jack Calcaterra.

They will receive All-America certificates at half-time ceremonies during the PurdueMichigan State basketball game. The certificates will be presented by Donald R. Pieper, UPI’s regional business executive at Indianapolis. Griese will also be honored as i the Big Ten’s “Most Valuable” player for 1966.
