Rodger Ward, one of the most successful automobile race drivers of all time and two-time "500” Mile Race winner, will be Honorary Education Chairman of the 1967 Cancer Crusade in Indiana. This announcement was made by Dr. Harry E. Mock, Jr., of Franklin, President of the American Cancer Society in Indiana. He joins Jack Mollenkopf, head football coach at Purdue University, who is serving a second year as State
Chairman of the educational and fmid-raising appeal. “I am solidly behind this Crusade,” Ward said, ‘‘because of the personal association of cancer with my family. Of the many requests I receive, I consider this one of the most pressing problems of our time and the Society to be worthy of my interest.” Ward will lend his support to the volunteers who will be distributing some 1,400,000 wam-

at present only 69 percent of Indiana residents can name one of cancer’s seven warning signals,” Ward said. "We believe the new action pamphlet, which is designed to be pasted on the family medicine cabinet, may widen public awareness and ultimately save lives.” An Indianapolis resident, 46-year-old Ward started his first ‘‘500” Mile Race in 1951. He retired after the 1966 race. He has won with stock cars, sports, cars, sprint cars, midgets, In-dianapolis-type machines and many others. He is two-time USAC Champion and joined the auto-racing immortals when he won his second Indianapolis "500” on Memorial Day in 1962.
Seven PGA golf tournaments required playoffs in 1966.

The Better Half (In appreciation of the contribution made by the wives of the coaches to the outstanding basketball played in Putnam County in that they give their husbands to the public five months of the year, The Banner is happy to introduce the wives of the County basketball coaches.)
Name: Deanna Sheese, wife of James Sheese, Russellville High. Address: R. R. 1, Russellville. Family: Jame Deneen, 2Vfe yrs.
old.
Occupation: Mother and home-
maker.
Hometown: Brazil. Graduated from Van Buren High School and attended Indiana State
University.
Favorite Sports: Basketball,
golf and bowling.
Pet Peeve: A person who expresses himself harshly against a coach without knowing all the facts a coach has to cope with during a ballgame. There is a reason for everything, as I have learned from my husband. Most Exciting Game Ever Witnessed: All games are exciting to me, win or lose. The most exciting was two years ago when Russellville won over Roachdale for the third
time that year.
Disadvantages of being a coach's wife: As a coach’s wife, I hear all comments, win or lose. If we win, “good game.” If we lose, “why.” It’s hard for me to keep control over some of these comments, win or lose. But then, those who make these comments, as far as I’m concerned, can get a degree and coach a team of their own. But then, the ones that know more than the coach think they are too smart
for that.
Comments: It is a wonderful life being married to a coach. I love the sport, and there are always more games to be seen and much to be learned. My husband never fails to surprise me during a ballgame. Just for the record, by my choice, I give heaven thanks 1 married a coach and not a referee.
