Linton Miners Upset Tiger Cubs 78To67

They say seeing is believing, but to Tiger Cub fans in attendance last night at the Uptown Gym, it was hard for them to believe, even though they looked at the scoreboard at the final buzzer and read Linton 78, Cubs 67. Not only was this a stunning blow to the Cubs’ press, it wrecked all hopes of overtaking Garfield for the Western Indiana Conference crown. And it all started the last quarter. The Cubs were leading 51-46, and it looked af if the Cubs were home free. But two Linton boys by the name of Bill Carpenter and Kerry Newson had other ideas. Not only did they make shambles of the famed Cub press, but Carpenter hit four straight buckets the fourth quarter and Newson five. At the 7:26 point, Ross fouled Newson to narrow the Cub lead to 49-52. Carpenter followed a rebound and was fouled by Harmless. The free toss was missed, but Linton missed two tips on the rebound before Newson canned it for a 53-52 Miner edge. Before the Cubs could score again, Newson and Carpenter hit back to back buckets to increase the Linton advantage to five with 6:01 remaining on the clock. None of the Cub fans were worried yet, as Harmless sank a one and one and John New drove in from the baseline for two. Score 57-56 Linton. But going through the Cub press like water pouring from a hydrant, Linton racked up six more points before Troyer out the margin to seven at 3:24. Then Carpenter and Troyer traded buckets and with 3:00 remaining, the Cubs were down seven.

Playing cool, deliberate ball, the Miners answered the Cubs’ desperate effort for a winning rally by tallying five points in the next minute and holding the Cubs scoreless, and roared into their longest lead of the evening at 72-60. Troyer socked in the final seven points for the Cubs, but his last minute heroics were too late. If it is any consolation, Troyer took game scoring honors with 34 points, but the rest of the % Cubs experienced a bad shooting game and none finished in the double figures. Linton finished with three players in double figures. Newson was high with 28; followed by Carpenter with 21 and John Brackemyre at 17. The Cubs connected on 28 of 67 attempts, but Linton was better, converting 30 of 57 and 12 of 14 in the torrid fourth quarter for the difference of the

game.

Next action for the 14-4 Cubs will be next Friday when they journey back to Terre Haute for a tilt with Gerstmeyer. Linton (78) FG FT

Playing their finest game in quite a while and their first home game since December 10, Coach Pat Rady uncorked his Bainbridge sharp-shooters and demolished the North Salem Blue Devils, 98-55. Not only did they please the home folks, but in the process, wrapped up the Big Four Conference crown, as second place Roachdale lost. The Pointers roared into a 22-14 first quarter advantage and ripped the nets for a .558 the rest of the game in securing their 15th win. North Salem tried to contain the point happy Pointers with a 1-2-2 zone, but with Norman Steele popping from the point, Larry from the side, Garry Martin at the baseline, and Ron Rossok working the middle, they found out what other

teams have found. It won’t work. Then in the final quarter, before the reserves took over, the Pointers ripped North Salem’s 1-3-1 press with eleven straight baskets without a miss. Larry Steele took game honors wtih 32 points, followed by Gary Martin’s eleven field goals, and Ron Rossok with 17 points. George Freshour tallied 19 for North Salem. Steve Chastain went home with 15 in the losing cause. Bainbridge had a 13 rebound majority to go with their 43-77 field goal shooting. North Salem managed 20 buckets in 53 attempts for a 37 per cent. The Pointers wait until next Saturday night to return to the hardwood. Ladoga provides the opposition.

No reserve game was played as North Salem didn’t have enough players.

Roachdale Hawks Bow To Granville Wells

Roachdale, using a rejuvenated line-up, lost their third game in a row since the finals of the county tourney, this time to Granville Wells, 68-53. Lacking the fire-power to counter the scoring received from nine Wells’ players, the Hawks fell behind early and spent the rest of the evening trying to catch up. In the second quarter, the Hawks made a determined bid to overtake the hosts, using

Tigers Oppose Indiana State DePauw’s Tigers very quickly have had to come off Cloud Nine to face the weekend prospect of bumping into the IOC’s kingpin, Indiana State, tonight at 8 p. m. in Terre Haute. The clash will be broadcast live by radio station WGREFM. It also will be video taped by Channel 10 (WTHI-TV) for replay tonight at 11 p. m. Reason for DePauw’s recent jubilation was Wednesday’s comeback win, 80-76, over old nemesis Butler. Board work and beefed up shooting helped the Tigers snare that one. Coach Earner McCall hopes he’ll get more of the same tonight on the hanks of the Wabash.

At 42, Lou Groza of the Cleveland Browns is the oldest active player in the National Football League.

seven field goals in 11 attempts, but the Rockets converted eight free throws to snip the rally. Then in the third stanza, David Chanley tallied ten of his team’s 18 points to forge the Rockets into a 16 point advantage and ice the game. Roachdale out-shot their opponents in percentages, 41 to 38, but only tried 46 attempts compared with Wells’ 71. Earl Harvey, working well under the bucket, led the Hawk attack with 20 points, twelve from the charity line. Earl Britton, starting for the first time, chipped in with 10 as did Ron

Snodgrass.

Jim Hannis led the winners with 20, followed by David Chanley’s 16. Roachdale will try to get back on the winning ledger when
