Christian Science Church The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., and its branches in many countries constitute the Church of Christ, Scientist. Mary Baker Eddy founded the Christian Science church as “a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing” (Church Manuel, page 17). The Lesson-Sermons read at the Sunday services in The Mother Church and its branches consist of citations from the Bible (King James Version) and “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (the Christian Science textbook by Mrs. Eddy). Each church maintains a Sunday School for young people up to the age of 20 years. The Wednesday evening meetings include readings from the Bible and Science and Health, testimonies of healing, and experiences and remarks on Christian Science. Each church maintains a free public Reading Room where authorized Christian Science literature may be read, borrowed, or purchased. In May, 1912, a small group of earnest Christian Scientists in Greencastle fulfilled their cherished desire to hold regular Christian Science services. First services were held in an East Washington home. The present edifice, at 429 Anderson St., was leased in 1937 and purchased the following year. Forty chairs were purchased and a piano was donated. A building fund was opened which continues to be active. Pictured above in a painting by Dr. Jean Sanders, which is owned by the Austin Spragues, the Victorian building has long been a favorite subject of local artists. Growth has continued, with Williamsburg pews and carpeting added in 1961, and draperies and lights installed behind the Reader’s desk. A Baldwin church organ was purchased in 1965. The Church of Christ, Scientist, has no clergy. It is a church of laymen, any one of whom, without distinction of sex, may rise to any position for which he has demonstrated fitness. The services are conducted by a First and a Second Reader elected by and from the membership for a period of three years. A Board of Directors is also elected to take general charge of the business and financial affairs of the church. Students from DePauw University provide music for the local services. Currently serving as Readers are Mrs. Norman J. Knights and Mrs. Marjorie Perkins. Members of the community are always cordially welcomed at all church services, at 11:00 on Sundays, and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. All are invited to visit and use the Reading Room and to enroll their children in the Sunday School. For. those at home, a weekly radio program may be heard, “The Bible Speaks to You,” each Sunday morning at 9:45 over WIBC (1070 kc).
