A Local Teenager's View

By Janet Staub A word is a spoken or written sign of idea term; oral expression; message; order; password; promise; brief remark or observation. Words can be interesting especially if a person can look through a dictionary containing many types of words. Three categories of words that are fun to play with are synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms. Synonyms are words that have the same meaning. An example of a synonym is big-large. The fun comes when synonyms are made. Like Hoosier Hys-

are spelled differently and have different meanings are called homonyms. An example is onewon. Another example is to-too-two. Again slang words enter the picture tough-tuff. All words no matter if it is an antonym, synonym, or a homonym can cause some kind of a feeling. It would be nice if the only words in the world were ones that made people feel happy. BY THE WAY: A synonym for County Champs seem to be clovers:

LETTER

to the EDITOR

Dear Editor: The League of Women Voters of Greencastle takes this opportunity to reply to a letter to the editor signed H. H. (could be Hubert Humphrey?). The League’s support of the transfer of Poor Relief from the Township Trustee to the Department of Public Welfare is a state wide action taken after four years study of public welfare in Indiana. Initially, only a few social agencies gave support to legislation to put all welfare under one agency. Now, many agencies and groups are supporting such a move. Some of these are: Indiana Council of Churches; Indiana Catholic Charities; Indiana Council of Jewish Women; Indiana Mental Health Association; Indiana Hospital Association; Indiana Conference on Social Welfare; Indiana Congress of Parents and Teachers; League of Women Voters. All welfare in Indiana except Poor Relief is administered by 92 county welfare departments. In addition there are 1009 Township Trustees who handle Poor Relief. At a time when everyone is concerned about property taxes it would seem economically sound to place Poor Relief under the department of public welfare. One public welfare agency would eliminate administrative duplication, and would provide a better accounting to the tax-paying public. It would permit the proper use of a skill-

ed staff large enough to develop retraining and rehabilitation programs. Hiis in turn, would help to eliminate the dependency of families on our welfare roles. Poor Relief is a vital part of the overall welfare program and should be run in just as professional a manner as the rest. Indiana can no longer afford two systems of welfare administration. Conflict Averted

PITTSBURGH UPI —Allegheny County commissioners were confident they have averted a serious political situation— alienating the mothers of the area.

The commissioners had set

aside May 13-14 for the county's annual fishing contest but when it was pointed out that May 14 was Mother’s Day the contest dates were changed to May 2021.

more readily available mortgage money should have thu nation’s depressed housing industry “moving smartly forward by the end of 1967 and ready for one of its best years in 1968,’’ Johnson said. The President put the greatest emphasis on price stability, however. From 1961 to 1965, the nation enjoyed both a strongly expanding economy and virtually stable prices. “Last year that record was blemished,” JbhiuK>n said. Consumer prices averaged 2.9 per cent higher in 1966 than in 1965. Wholesale prices were up 3.2 per cent. From December, 1965, to December, 1966, the cost of living rose 3.3 per cent, while wholesale prices advanced 1.7 per cent. While Johnson acknowledged that ending inflation ia “one of our major tasks,” he cautioned that “it will not be accomplished all at once, or all in 1967.” Johnson said the government can’t do it all. Labor sad management must help.

THb Amethyst Today

In viewing antique jewelry which is so popular now, you see the lovely gemstone, Amethyst, used frequnetly in yellow gold settings combined with small pearls and diamonds. On the other hand, you see Amethyst used in larger forms in contemporary silver jewelry which sells for most reasonable prices. This is certainly a reflection on the history of amethyst which before the turn of the century was a most expensive gem, as contrasted with the market today.

Large finds of amethyst quartz occurred early in the 20th Century in Brazil, and this made the previous value of amethyst drop in price so that now this beautiful gem is within reach of every woman. Prior to that time, amethyst was seen in fabulous jewel collections such as those owned by Catherine the Great of Russia, Empress Charlotte of France and Mexico, and the Vatican. In fact, amethyst has long been called “the ecclesiastical gem” because of its long time use in the special rings of Bishops.

For the woman who appreciates beauty on a small budget, I think genuine amethyst jewelry is a very good buy. It combines beautifully with a wide variety of other gemstones, from turquoise to ruby, diamonds and pearls. The coloring, too, in a fine amethyst, complements so many of todays fashions, especially the greens and golden tones. And for those born in the month of February, don’t forget that this is the Birthstone for the month, and said to be very lucky for those born then who wear it.
