for their brutality toward their students.” Another recommendation urged adoption of a policy “to the effect that racist name-call-ing and brutality will be met with instant dismissal.”

Nine members of the Nation- , _ al Association for the Advancement of Colored People said they would continue their picketing at the four schools this week. The NAACP branch sent letters to school administrators and policy makers recommending a four-point program of action. One of the recommendations was the discharge of teachers and principals at “pre- — dominately Negro elementary schools who have earned notoriety in the Negro community

The branch also urged the employment of more Negro teachers and office workers and an end to what it termed de facto segregation which “has historically fostered inferior education for the Negro students.” The most recent incident, the NAACP said, involved a teacher at Roosevelt School who was accused of referring to a Negro youth as “black boy,” and calling several Negro girls “nigger babies.”

All Alone At The Office All Because She's Shy

By ROBERTA ROESCH Dear Roberta Roesch: How can I avoid making my co-workers feel I’m aloof when I don’t mean to be that way? My problem is that I’m so shy I never know what to talk about when I’m in the midst of a crowd. Because of this, I walk away from the group and keep very much to myself. Mistaken Impression Now I understand the girls in the office don’t like me because they think I want to be alone. Yet there’s nothing I desire more than being one of them. Please send me some leaflets that will help me. C.O. Dear C. O.:

I have mailed you "Pointers to Good Conversation,” which I suggest you study and put into practice each day. Since you admit that you suffer from shyness (as does half the rest of the world), you won’t find practicing its pointers particularly easy at first But don’t give up right away. As you go along, you will find It easier to follow the suggestions in the pamphlet. One way to feel easier in conversation is to develop your listening powers. This will make almost anyone popular because everyone likes good listener. Besides, when you listen sufficiently, you store up tidbits for conversation.

To make yourself popular as a listener—and appear less aloof to boot—pay attention to what people say. Proper Attitude Rather than walking away from your co-workers, stick with them and show by your attitude that you think they’re interesting and important. TTiat attitude is catching. In fact, if you treat others that way often enough, it won’t be long before you will be regarded by them in the same light Dear Roberta Roesch: I’ve been faithful to one firm for years, only to find at the start of this year that the new regime that is now at the head is hiring people from the outside for jobs that I could do if I were promoted to them. I’ve tried to earn why this is the case. I feel the firm is taking this action because my

Her Co-Workers Think She is Aloof, But She really Isn’t employers think the old-timers won’t leave no matter how they are treated. I don’t want to stand still for the rest of the time that I work, so what action would you suggest ? K. R. Dear K. R.: Learn all you can about the situation in your firm. Then when you have the facts, try to talk to someone in your company who is in a position to give you more opportunity. Make It Clear When you get a chance to speak to people at the head, put your cards on the table and make it clear that you want to progress along with the new employes who are coming into the firm. To make your employers feel a promotion is necessary, however, you will have to back your ambition with action by giving more service than your daily quota requires, training your self for new jobs and more responsibility, and making yourself more valuable to the firm in every possible way. Mexico Reports Rot Invasion ZAMORA, Mexico UPI—Officials Tuesday fought an invasion by thousands of field rats around the edges of Lake Chapalt with poisoned food and airplane dusting. Federal and state agencies cooperated in an effort to exterminate the rats which authorities said have caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. The rats devoured seeds, vegetables and cereals, officials said. Most of the area has been sown with seeds and grain dipped in a rat poison which is harmless to humans.

DEFENDS FATS BERKELEY, Calif. UPI— Weight-watchers, don’t worry too much about eating fats. A University of California nutritionist says a certain amount of fat is necessary for good nutrition because it provides a concentrated source of calories. Some fats help provide the essential needs of vitamins IA and D and vital fatty acids.
