K.C. Chiefs Outclassed by NFL's Green Bay Packers

By Scott Baillie LOS ANGBLRS UPI—Coach Vince Lombardi won’t come right out and say so, but indications today were that ha felt the Kansas City Chiefs got out of their league in mors ways than one when they tangled with his mighty Green Bay Packers. “Kansas City is a good football team with fine speed hut rd have to say that National Lsague football is tougher," Itombardi said Sunday after the flackers used their oonssrvatiTe attack to knock off the American Football League titlists, fB-10, In the first annual Super Bowl. A crowd of 88,086 at the Memorial Coliseum, plus an estimated sixty million television viewers, watched the Packers draw away from a 7-7 deadlock to down the Chiefs behind the deft quarterbacking of Bart Starr.

The modest NFL player of the year, who is paid to locate a team’s defensive weakness then wreck it with passes, did just that to the Chiefs and helped earn himself and each Packer teammate 516,000 in winners’ money. Kansas City had to settle for the losers’ cut of 57,500 which still isn’t bad for an afternoon’s work. If there had to be a goat in file game, the spotlight would fall on defensive halfback Willie Mitchell of the Chiefs who was burned by two touchdown passss from Stair to Mtax McGee. “But I don’t feel that they were working on me too much and they oan’t make believe that Green Bay is that much better than we are,” Mitchell said afterward. Starr had a better day than his K. C. counterpart, quarterback Len Dawson. Starr hit on 16 passes out of 23 attempts for

Reelsville Indians Lose to Montezuma Aztecs, 54-47

The Reeslville Indians stumped their toes Saturday and were outscored 20 to eight in the second quarter by the Montezuma Aztecs who went on to win 54-47. In picking up their third win of the season, the Aztecs burned the cords at a .710 clip in that torrid second quarter, hitting 10 of 14 field goal attempts. On the other hand, the best the Indians could do was four of 16 in that span, and went to their seventh defeat They have won five times. Trailing by six at half, the Indians staged a rally the last half on the shooting of Ray Peeler and Ron Wallace, but the Aztecs killed off any chances of being overtaken by converting 12 of 15 free throws to hang on to win. Wallace finished the night with 17 points, followed by Peeler with 14. High man for the game was Rierden with 21 points. Both teams made 21 field goals, but Montezuma had the upper hand at the free throw line, sinking 12 to Reelsville’s five. Montezuma’s 21 field goals came on 39 attempts for a 54 per cent, while Reelsville’s same number was made in 49 tries for 43 per cent. In rebounding, the Aztecs had a large superiority, pulling off 33. The best the Indians could do was 19. The next action for the Indians will be Saturday afternoon, when they have the task of stopping the winner of the Cloverdale-Bainbridge game. Big Ten Net Leaders Must Defend Positions

By United Frets International Northwestern and Michigan State, co-leaders in the Big Ten basketball chase at 2-0, will be called upon to defend their positions this week. Four league teams take a break from competition for final examinations. Northwestern, idle last Saturday, will play host to scrappy Iowa this Saturday. Michigan State, which climbed into the first-place tie with a 79-70 victory over the Hawkeyes, goes to Ann Arbor for a contest with arch-rival Michigan. In the only other Big Ten game scheduled this week, Minnesota is at Ohio State Saturday. Purdue, Illinois, Iowa and Indiana are idle. Indiana, now 2-1, beat Ohio State, 81-80, to drop the Buckeyes to 1-1 and prevent them from taking a share of the league lead. Butch Joyner had 22 points for the winners, two of which were free throws that won the game in the last two minutes. Wisconsin, tied with Indiana for third place, was idle along with Northwestern.

250 yards gained and threw one interception. It was the first theft to be recorded against him since he had one picked off last October by the Chicago Bears. Dawson hit on 16 out of 27 for 211 yards and one touchdown but worked against a fierce Packers rush that floored him for consecutive losses of 14 and 11 yards in the third period. McGee scored the first of the day on a 37-yarder from Starr with 8:56 gone in the opening period, snagging the ball onehanded from Mitchell. Then as the roof slowly sank on the Chiefs and their tricky, “Kansas City stack” defenses in the third period, McGee grabbed one In the end zone 13 yards away for the Packers’ fourth touchdown, once again in Mitchell's territory. With Green Bay holding a 7-0 advantage, Dawson brought the Chiefs into contention by hitting Curt McClinton with a seven yard toss 4:20 into the second period. Jim Taylor put Green Bay ahead to stay six minutes after McClinton’s touchdown, charging around left end for 14 yards. Then Mike Mercer, who had missed an earlier field goal attempt, kept the Chiefs close by booting one from 31 yards out with 54 seconds left In the half. After that is was all Green Bay. Elijah Pitts, holding down the halfback spot as usual for Paul Homung, who has been hurt most of the season, charged across from the five yard line with Green Bay’s third score early in the third period. Pitts’ one yard smash midway through the final quarter sewed things up. Kansas City may have been out of its league, as Lombardi inferred, but don’t go way folks. Next Saturday comes the AFL All Star game in Oakland. Dawson and 11 other Chiefs, all $7,500 richer, are scheduled to show up. The following day, Starr and seven Packer teammates, each already richer by 515,000, play for the West team in the NFL’s annual pro bowl here.
