Indiana State Beats Tigers, 88-66; Ball State Plays Here Tomorrow
While DePauw was busy plugging one hole in its dike, two more streams—nay, torrents— from the Banks of the Wabash broke out last night and washed the Tigers away, 89-66. Before Indiana State’s powerful and gifted Jerry Newsom broke the game open with six minutes left, DePauw was hanging on by a finger with a 67-57 deficit and improving prospects.
But Newsom, who finished with 32 points, single-handedly put down the Tigers with six points in 72 seconds. The outburst, sandwiched around Tom McGurk’s lone bucket, swept the Sycamores ahead 73-59 with 4:12 left. In the hectic time that was left the Tigers managed but three baskets and a free throw while the Sycamores pumped in

Several people have asked my opinion concerning the sectional lineup. Since the arrangement is the same as last year, my feelings are the same I don’t approve but I will attempt to make the best of it. The reason I don’t is selfish and simple. It takes away the personal flavor of having an all-Putnam county tourney. True, it enhances the chance of having more winners from the county as last year, but locally, schools as Cascade, North Salem and Rockville will be considered foreigners to many people, and hard to accept as a Putnam County entry. However, since the entries keep dropping in the Indiana High School Athletic Association, it is necessary to realign the field and cross countsy lines. For instance, last year there were 544 teams that made the run to the final four. This year, 31 less will begin the long road to frustration. It is comforting to read through, in the IHSAA bulletin covering the basketball tourneys, that 53 of the 64 sectional sites are composed of teams from more than one county, and of the eleven, most are in the large metropolitan areas. Maybe we are lucky, at the extreme, the sectional at Knox will consist of 10 teams from seven counties. So, let us enjoy our sectional as it is, because it won’t be long tin til it will be changed again. North Salem isn’t so far and the Blue Jays play five of the county teams. Cascade does battle with Fillmore, Cloverdale and Greencastle, but Rockville only plays the Cubs.
In the near future, the sectional make-up will be overhauled agrin. With the completion of the North and South Putnam High Schools, only four schools will remain in the county and four more will have to be imported for a recommended eight team site. It is possible that Putnam county may lose its sectional altogether, and the only thing we will get to keep on the local level is our property tax.

Clovers Drop to 11th in State Poll
The Huskies of Evansville North aren’t quite nipping at the heels of front-running Michigan City and Ft. Wayne South, but they’re a solid No. 3 in the Indiana Associated Press high school basketball poll this week. North, which didn’t get a vote last week, made believers out of voting sports writers and b.*oadcasters in one day. Undefeated themselves, they took two ranked teams out of the unbeaten class, dumping No. 10 Bosse and No. 6 Harrison in the Evansville tournament last Thursday. No. 1 Michigan City and No. 2 South repeated, the Red Devils for the third week and the Archers for the second. Two other new names showed in the Top Ten. East Chicago Washington returned as No. 9 on a victory over Hammond, which dropped from third to No. 8. Undefeated Logansport appeared for the first time, as No. 10. Squeezed out along with the losers at Evansville was undefeated Cloverdale, idle through the holiday period. The Clovers were eighth last week. New Castle, No. 4, and Warsaw, No. 5, lost last week but held their places. The Top Ten teams, with won-lost records, points and opponents’ points: 1. MichiMn City #-0 •?« 516 2. F.W. 16 more points, eight of them by deadeye reserves. DePauw hosts Ball State here tomorrow night at 8 p.m. State saw a 16-point early second half lead of 41-25 dissipate midway in the final stanza when the Tigers finally found out where to put the ball. Three times DePauw whacked the margin to eight, but every time either Newsom or 6-8 Rich Mason, who ended with 20 points, poked in a critical bucket. Now 9-1 and deservedly ranked sixth nationally, State showed the Tigers that all you have to do tq win is hit the basket. The Sycamores outgunned their hosts .472 to .280 in the first half while building a 39-25 intermission margin. And they did even better in the final 20 minutes, hitting 21 of 36 for .583 State ended up shooting .527 on 38 of 72. DePauw had .350 (28-80) and got that only because of .414 last half improvement. Little Jack Hogan had a particularly bad night, hitting on one of 13. DePauw had hoped to effec tively defense at least two of the Sycamores’ big three of Newsom, Mason and Butch Wade. But it didn’t happen that way. Wade was held to a respectable 14, seven below his average, but Mason broke loose for a season high of 20 and, of course, Newsom went right out of sight, hitting 15 field goals in 22 efforts and two for three at the foul line. Strangely, the Tigers, with their shorter front line, held their own on the boards where Indiana State had a razor thin
48-47 edge. Mason had 16 rebounds for the winners, and Tom McGurk, who had his best offensive night of the year with 18, got 15 caroms for DePauw. Jim Jackson, Tom McCormick and Denny Barrett were other Tigers who joined McGurk in the double figure scoring. Jackson had 11, Barret 12, and McCormick scored 16. McCormick had 11 of DePauw’s first 14 points in the secqnd half. It was Newsom who broke up the ball game in the first half with a pair of quick baskets. The Sycamores were on top, 2017, with 7:51 to play before the Columbus, Ind., junior upped it to seven. Helped by some Tiger miscues, State kept adding to the margin and worked it to a comfortable 14 at halftime.
Rod Hervey Stars For State In Freshman Tilt
Clqverdale’s Rod Hervey made a triumphal return to Putnam County last night, scoring 14 points to help lead Indiana State’s freshmen to a 74-61 conquest of the DePauw frosh. Hervey and two of his classmates tossed in 14 points apiece to lift the little Sycamores out of a 39-35 halftime deficit for the 13-point verdict. Larry Downs of DePauw was the game’s high scorer with 22 points on seven field goals and eight for 10 free throws. Mickey Schramm, with 13, was the only other Tiger to break 10. DePauw at the outset of the second half by six points, but watched it disappear while the Tigers tied the score at 55-55 with 8:22 to play. Two quick fast break goals put State up front permanently, and Hervey iced the homecoming cake with four points in the last 43 seconds. His 14 points came on five baskets and perfect shooting on four attempts at the line. State outscored DePauw 32-18 from the field, but the Tigers narrowed the count by hitting 25 of 31 free throw attempts. Indiana State hit 10 of 18 at the line.
