By ROBERTA ROESCH In this season of festivities, one o f our most enjoyable nights was spent with a book we received for Christmas called “All About Entertaining” J (McKay). The book, which boasts the • subtitle “Everything You Need to Know to Have a Fabulous Social Life,” was written by ,two sisters, Kay Corinth and Mary Sargent. Gotham Resident Kay, who lives in New York, has a full-time job as mer- • chandising director of a national teenage magazine. Mary, who lives in New Jersey, has an active life in civic affairs. “Actually, I believe everybody wants to write some kind of book.” Kay told me, when I , asked her why she and her sister decided to write “All About Entertaining,” although they already had such busy 5 schedules. “My sister and I were no exceptions,” she added. “We felt a book on how to entertain imaginatively would be a time-

ly one.”

Once Kay and Mary made the decision to get to work on the book, they started planning it together and outlining each

dressed in silver—silver Stockings, silver shoes, silver dresses, or what you will. “With that the case all over, it’s natural that the silver on your table is more important than ever if you want a beautiful setting. Fortunately, today silver is something every woman can have, even if she

rents it.”

“Turning from silver and en-! tertaining.” I said, “how can girls and women have and use opportunities for imaginative

careers?”

Without Emotion “By being objective and unemotional about business.” Kay j Corinth said. "By jumping in instead of being afraid. By leading and pointing the way instead of following and drifting. “And by finding satisfaction in the work that one must do.”

South won the first trick with the ace of diamonds and innocently played the ten of clubs from his hand. 'West’s decision to play low was the Pointless Duck. South surely had a strong six-card suit for his bid. which meant that Eas* could have no trumps at all. By ducking the first club. West allowed South to get out of trouble for a mere 100 points (South’s honors were not counted in tournament bridge). The rest of the defense was equally inelegant. South led a heart, and East took both top hearts and led another heart for West to ruff. West cashed his high diamond and led another high diamond to make South ruff. CAREFUL PLAY South now carefully led his spade to dummy's ace before tackling trumps. He took the , ace of clubs and led the queen j to West's king. West had to | return a diamond, and South

ruffed and drew the last trump. Now he could take his good heart to wind up with eight tricks. West should- take the second trick with the king of clubs and lead diamonds. South ruffs the third diamond and leads a heart to the king. East leads a low spade to dummy's ace. wins the heart continuation and leads the queen of spades through South. West must get two more trump tricks, and South is down two instead of one. Dropping a defensive trick isn’t the end of the world, but a player who makes a habit of throwing away 200 points must be either very rich or very friendly. DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: S-Q J 6 4 3 2; H-A K 7 5 2; D-9 3; CNone. What do you say? Answer: Bid one spade. You may be a point or two short for a normal opening bid, but it pays to stretch a point or so when you have eleven cards in the major suits.

ly until it was time to edit the bopk together. Data Filled Chapters When the book was finished, the sisters had created over 400 pages of information that can be an addition to any hostess’ bookshelf. From the first page to the last, they managed to fill their chapters with such helpful tips as: finding your hostess personality; organizing parties painlessly; carrying off your entertaining successfully; being a popular guest; dressing correctly for your social life; and setting your table imagina-

tively.

“Both my sister and I have always believed in imaginative table-settings,” Kay said, “and I have found in traveling around the country that this is very much the trend today. “Everything seems to be on the silver standard, too,” Kay said. ‘Tn traveling for my job, I often find that you can’t go to a party this year yriffipnt

ting tired of reading about the livestock enrollment, but if these are not completed during the first of January, the 4-H’er will not be allowed to show at tha State Fair. These enrollment cards are for beef, sow and litter, sheep flock and dairy. For new members, these cards can be obtained at the County Extension Office or from the local 4-H leader. These must be turned into the Extension Office by the first part of January. * • * One of the main purposes of 4-H is to help the members to develop leadership ability. This is a quality that is hard to judge or evaluate, but I was very pleased to see some of our 4-H members in action last Tuesday. There was a committee that was to decorate the 4-H Building for the Jr. Leader dance. I had to leave to go out of town, before they started decorating. When I got back, they had done an excellent Job of decorating and cleaning the building. It was not an easy job. The band committee and refreshment committee did a good job carrying out their duties on their own. It make* you feel proud that we have youth in our community that have the Initiative ot think and operate for themselves in an orderly manner. The decoration committee was composed of Donna South, Marie McKee, Tonya Harris, Linda New, Doris Sutherlin. Carolyn Hurst and Steve Albin. Pat Samsel, Carolyn Torr and Robert New acquired the band and Becky McFarland, Ruthie Miller, Linda New, David Carrington, Melvin Grimes ind Danny Cottingim furnished the refreshments. Robert New and John New brought the Christmas tree. The Jr. Leader dance was a success even though the weather was against us. This was a very good group to accompany. Our thanks are to Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Albin, Jr., for chaperoning the dance. • • e The Purdue Ag. Alumni annual fish fry will be held Friday, January 20 at the Purdue Armory «td Loeb Playhouse. The program will include Dean Earl Butz, Purdue All-American Band, Purdue Glee Club and Michigan State football coach, Duffy Daugherty. This should be quite a program. Tickets can be obtained at the County Extension Office before January IS. , • . . • *- The Putnam County Ag.*Alumni January 3 meeting has been postponed until February 2.
