Mickey Mouse's Creator Is Dead HOLLYWOOD UPI — An obscure young cartoonist sat in a modest Kansas City, Mo., garage workshop one afternoon in the early 1920s and watched with fascination as a brash little mouse walked across his drawing board. The almost penniless artist, a farm boy named Walter Elias Disney, called the mouse Mortimer. When the tiny rodent began making daily appearances, he decided the name was too formal and changed it to Mickey —Mickey Mouse. Mickey was to become the squeaky-voiced model for hundreds of animated barnyard characters who would carry Walt Disney to fame and enormous wealth. Disney, who died at the age of 65 Thursday of acute circulatory failure, went on to create the fabulous Disneyland amusement park and produce a long series of family-type motion pictures. Disney won 29 Academy Awards and more than 700 citations from presidents, kings and queens. At the news of his death, messages of condolence came in from around the world. Disney died at St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank, just across the street from his sprawling studio. He had undergone surgery there last Nov. 21 for the removal of his left lung, on which doctors discovered tumor which had caused abscess.

A local Teenager's View By Janet Staubb Parents, teachers, and other people have noticed a change in the be v ~vior of youth in the pr _ t few weeks and especially this week — the caus? — Santa Claus is watching them! Everybody has the Christmas spirit and is glad to show it. As shoppers pack the stores, customers smile and receive in return a very pleasant smile from the local -ales people. Most of the clerks in the stores have many good suggestions on what to get the person who has everything, or even the person who doesn’* have anything. Sometimes the customers expect too much of the sales people and are irritated if they don’t get what they want, but if that person had to work the long, busy hours of the Christmas season and still provide a Christmas spirit in their own home they would probably find the going a bit rough at times, also. Decorations are out all over. The fraternities and sororities on the DePauw campus seem to be more beautiful every year, Many houses are also beautifully decorated this year. Adding to the spirit are the chimes at Gobin '""'urch. (Personally I think they should be played all the time!) BY THE WAY: How does a person make Chris 1 s cookies that are still around for Christmas?!
