Powell's Seating To Be Opposed

WASHINGTON UPI — Rep. Lionel Van Deerlin, D-Calif„ said today he would try to block the seating of Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, D-N.Y., when Congress convenes Jan. 10.

Van Deerlin said his decision was prompted by the action of a

New York state Judge who signed an order for Powell’s arrest. The arrest order is the outgrowth of a 3 1-2 year legal battle by Powell against a cash award to a Harlem woman who had sued him for slander. In a statement, Van Deerlin noted that because of the arrest order outstanding against him, Powell would not be allowed to serve in the armed forces, “It would be a monstrous perversion of patriotism and morality if a man would be barred from serving his country in uniform because of unlawful acts should be allowed a voice in policies which affect the lives of men who do serve," Van Deerlin said. Van Deerlin said he was making his intentions known now so that Powell could have time to satisfy the judgement against him and purge himself cf the court order. He said he was also acting now so that other members would have time to decide how they would judge the seating challenge.

Moving Pictures WASHINGTON UPI — When a ruler is toppled, his country's embassies around the world remove his portrait from their walls. But the Burundi Embassy in Washington had no such chore when young King Ntare V was overthrown this week after five months on the throne of the tiny African nation. “We never did get his picture,” an embassy spokesman said Wednesday in pledging support for the new regime.
