Purdue's Griese ' Named UPI i Back of the Week LAYAYETTE UPI — Bob Griese, Purdue's celebrated j quarterback from Evansville, took a bow today as UPI Mid-1 west “Back of the Week” for i engineering the come-from- | behind 25-21 victory over Illinois last Saturday. The win put Purdue in the driver’s seat as the team to represent the Big Ten in the

j Rose Bowl,

Griese, who holds virtually every school passing record, fired a 32-yard strike to halfback Jim Finley with 81 seconds left for . the winning touchdown. All told, he passed for three 1 touchdowns and his aerials accounted for 288 yards, a singlegame school record. His 317 ! yards total offense missed by 5 yards tying the record he set against Notre Dame last year, j “There was more pressure on me when I kicked the field goal that beat Michigan last year,” j recalled Griese. “Last Saturday’s pressure was on Finley — he had to catch the ball.” Griese was determined to fire the game-winning pass to keep the Boilermakers in the Rose

Bowl picture.

The All-America signal caller, with three games of his collegiate career left, may be the most celebrated player in Purdue history, but he won't let it show. He went to summer school

studying opponents’ defenses.

After three years of frustration, Melvin Stevens, 27, Rural Route 1, Greencastle, hit the jackpot, or I should say, killed his first deer. Using a Baer bow with a 45-lb. pull, Stevens shot the 7 point buck while sitting i na tree. His good fortune happened southwest of Greencastle Saturday afternoon. Banner Photo—Don Whitehead
