Ghana Accuses Ousted Dictator ACCRA, Ghana UPI — The military government Tuesday accused ousted dictator Kwame Nkrumah of using Soviet patrol boats with Russian crews to supply arms to rebels in neighboring African countries. The charges said Nkrumah, overthrown last February by the army while visiting Communist China, planned to aid dissidents in coups against at least six governments and replace them “with regimes subservient to his own.” Ghana’s latest accusations against Nkrumah were contained in a 91-page booklet issued by the information department of the ruling council headed by Maj. Gen. Joseph Ankrah. The charges add to the turmoil with neighboring Guinea which has erupted into an international dispute. Ghana Saturday seized 19 Guineans, including Foreign Minister Lansana Beavogui, when their plane stopped at Accra airport en route to the Organization of African Unity OAU foreign ministers meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Fifteen members of the group are students. Radio Conakry in a broadcast monitored in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Monday night urged the United States to “do all it can” to get the 19 Guineans freed. It again charged “American imperialism” was behind the arrests and Washington was “entirely responsible” for the incident. The Ghanaian military government said the 19 would be freed when the government of left-leaning Guinean President Sekou Toure freed 100 Ghanaians allegedly being held as political prisoners in Guinea. Guinea Sunday placed the U.S. ambassador in Conakry under house arrest, then had to turn back a mob of 5,000 Monday which tried to storm the U.S. Embassy in the Guinean capital. After bitter Washington protests. Ambassador Robinson McUvaine was freed.

By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD UPI—Get this quote from Walter Matthau: “There are very few leading men in the world. I mean men who are masculine, witty, authoritative, forceful, rugged, intelligent and experienced. “And I’m all for these things. Me and about eight other guys.” It was difficult to determine whether Matthau was serious. One usually thinks of a leading man in terms of Cary Grant, Rock Hudson or Paul Newman — dashing, handsome types. Matthau doesn’t qualify by those standards. He has a prominent nose, small eyes and, well, the appearance of a guy you wouldn’t ordinarily consider a romantic leading man. A plumber, maybe. But he is singularly blessed with enormous talent. And he is indeed a romantic leading man in his new movie, “A Guide for the Married Man.” ‘T’ve been hollering for 20 years to play leading men,” he said. “But the money is always scared and conservative. Now they’re going for the actor instead of the sticks of wood. The sticks are going back to the forest.” Matthau was another journeyman actor for those 20 years, working on Broadway,
television and a score of movies. Then he starred in the Broadway version of “A Shot in the Dark” in 1962 that propelled him starward. Last year he attained the top in “The Odd
Couple.”

Switch Engines Cause Accident DOVER, N. J. UPI — Two unmanned, runaway switch engines sped over seven miles of track Tuesday before plowing head on into a five-car ErieLackawanna Railroad passenger train. One person was killed and at least six others w r ere injured. A railroad spokesman said two connected switch engines, which are used to couple freight cars, broke away from the Port Morris Railroad Yard here and rolled at a speed of 30 miles an hour eastward through an industrial section of Dover, 25 miles west of New York City. The engines passed through the Dover Railroad Station to the amazement of passengers and personnel moments before they slammed into the westbound train a mile beyond the station. The grinding collision tore up some 150 feet of track, derailed four passenger cars and hurled wheels, springs and other parts over the area. The front two passenger cars were twisted open like tin cans and flipped on their sides.

“Fifteen or 20 years ago they
wouldn’t have used me as a leading man,” he said. “They wanted the psuedo-poetic, suave type. Even Sir Laurence Olivier was considered a homely man for leading romantic parts. | Most of the types they wanted :

What about the other eight bonafide leading men? “Jack Lemmon is one of them,” Matthau said. “I can’t think of the others right now. I let all the rest think I mean j
