Introducing The 1966-67 Roachdale Hawks

Optimism is the key word when talking to Roachdale’s new head basketball coach, Carl Treece about their basketball fortunes for the coming year. And there is reason to be optimistic. From a team that posted a 10 won, 11 lost record last season, six lettermen are returning, plus two other boys that are showing rapid improvement. “We are not big as basketball teams go, with only one boy standing over six feet, but we do have experience, speed, and depth. Depth, I believe, will be the key to our ‘winning. Right now, it would be hard for me to select a starting line-up as all of the fellows seem about equal in ability and all of them have had some experience,” comments Treece. “Right now though, Mark Smith has been very impressive in practice. He has good potential, good attitude and prob-! ably very few opposing players ' will move him around in the i middle.” Mark stands 6-2 and weighs 245. “Earl Harvey is, another player showing real promise, and if his improvement keeps pace, he should be real tough,” continues Treece. “I like the way Bob Blaydes! plays too; he has been a consistent performer, and seems to be level-headed; like-wise Steve | Ceilings. “Overall,” comments Treece, while watching the cheerleaders prepare for a group photograph, “I am hoping for an improvement over last year’s team record. When asked about the style of offensive and defensive play, Treece answered, “Plans are now to play a semi-controlled style of game and fast-break when the opportunity presents itself. We have good speed so on defense we will probably ] play a man-to-man and press

a bit.”

Carl Treece is a very en-1

thusiastic young man with a matching personality. He is the fourth head coach in four years at Roachdale, and any basketball fan will tell you that isn’t the ideal situation to mold a winning team. But if his enthusiasm is catching, Roachdale could very well be the dark horse in the county. Treece came to Roachdale by way of Battleground High School, Purdue University, and two years as junior high coach

at Tipton. He feels to produce a winning basketball team, there must be an excellent feeder system and he hopes to encourage the youngsters at Roachdale to start at an early age in learning the fundamentals of winning basketball. Assisting Treece this year is another freshman coach in the county, David Flora. Flora is not a stranger to Roachdale, as his first three years of high
