Old Gold Gridders Blast Earlham 11

DePauw Tigers entertained Earlham College of the Hoosier College Conference Saturday afternoon at Blackstock Stadium and chalked up their second victory of the season to go

the two-pointer instead of the tie but the pass went astray. Lortz executing the pass option play to perfection came right back and guided the Tigers to an eighty-yard touch-

only 73 yards rushing and 55 yards passing. Also they turned the ball over to the offensive three times, twice on fumble recoveries and once on an intercepted pass. From the start, the game had all indications of being a highscoring affair. Earlham received and promptly moved the ball to their 47, but quarterback Coates was smeared on a big third down play. Earlham kicked to DePauw’s 20 but a clip placed the ball on the DePauw 11. Eleven plays later found DePauw on the Earlham 31, but a third and five pass play was intercepted by Flanagan on his 18. DePauw’s defense forced the Quakers to kick to the Earlham 49. Sticking to the ground, Lortz moved the Tigers 49 yards in 10 plays for the lead touchdown with 21 seconds left in the first quarter. John Butler went over from the one. Tim Feemster booted his first of four extra points to give DePauw a lead they never yielded. Earlham promptly received the ensuing kick and marched 62 yards in nine plays for the six points. The only pass in their TD drive was the 13 yard fling from Coates to Mike Benson in the end zone for the score. Earlham elected to for

brought down. Five plays later, Lortz sneaked the final yard. With the reserves working the fourth quarter, DePauw tallied two more touchdowns. The defense forced Earlham to punt from their own 14 to their 37. With Dan Breckenridge guiding the team, the Tigers traveled the 37 yards in 6 plays, highlighted by a 15yard pass from the quarterback to Holton, good for a first down on the Quakers’ 7. Gary Taylor then broke over from the four. DePauw copped the final six points with only two seconds remaining in the ball game. This drive started on the Tiger 47 with 1:53 showing on the clock. A pass interference penalty, immediately followed by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Earlham coach resulted in the ball on the Quaker one yard line. Gary Taylor dived the final yard, and a Kyhos pass to Moore resulted in the two point conversion. A very colorful and entertaining half time show was witnessed by the approximately 1,800 fans. High school bands from North Vermillion, South Putnam, Greeneastle, Attica, Pittsboro, Cascade, Roachdale, and Crawfordsville treated the

Michigan State Whips Purdue Michigan State moved a big step toward its second consecutive Big Ten title with its 41-20 rout of Purdue Saturday. MSU now faces conference games with Northwestern, Iowa, and Indiana, teams with only two Big Ten wins among them. Purdue, in a second place tie with Illinois after the loss to Michigan State, is a favorite to take over undisputed possession of the runner-up spot when the Boilermakers meet Illinois Saturday at Lafayette. Purdue needs a victory to hold onto second place and earn a trip to the Rose Bowl. Michigan State is excluded from the 1967 Rose Bowl because the Spartans played there last win-

ter.

Illinois lost two of Its most experienced linemen, Co-Capt. Bo Batchelder and A1 Waters, Saturday in its 6-3 upset by Stanford. Northwestern scored its first conference victory by spoiling Iowa’s homecoming. 24-15. The Wildcats face a drubbing at their own homecoming, however. They will play Michigan | State Saturday. Iowa edged closer to an unwanted record now held by 1 Northwestern — 17 consecutive Big Ten losses. The Hawkeyes are predicted to tie that record when they host Indiana this

week.

The victory was the first in confererence play for Michigan and it was Minnesota’s first Big Ten loss. Ohio State came from behind to pull a homecoming game out of the fire, whipping Wisconsin, 24-13, on three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Sandy Koufax, Los Angeles Dodgers pitching ace who holds the lifetime record for most I games pitched with 10 or more strikeouts, turned in his best performances in 1959 when he ; struck out 18 San Francisco Giants and in 1962, when he struck out 18 Chicago Cubs in a single game.

The only lead the All-Stars could muster was an opening foul shot. After that it was all coaches. With the Greeneastle duo of Dave McCracken and Hal Sampson using their superior height to advantage, the Put nam County coaches roared to the easy victory over the small-
