AH Keyed Up Over Keys Of Strange Typewriter
By ROBERTA ROESCH Dear Roberta Roesch: Does an applicant get a ' chance to practice her typing - and familiarize herself with a strange typewriter before she is given a test during a job inter- ■ view? Unless I have a chance to v .practice I am afraid I will be so nervous I will make errors simply because I am not used to that machine. O. E. Practice Permitted Dear O. E.: Many employment agencies and places of business permit .job applicants to practice on their machines before typing ..tests are given. In fact, many places are so understanding about this that the chance can usually be yours, for the asking if it isn’t offered automatically. In addition, most personnel v^offices realize that many job- ; seekers are nervous during a typing test. So, if you do a ^.reasonably good job in general ; and impress personnel people « favorably in other ways, your nervousness will not be held against you. Passe’ Equipment Dear Roberta Roesch: * I have just returned to work t after 22 years as a homemaker. * Much to my surprise, the office f equipment I am expected to use * in my new job is more out of f date than the machines and procedures I used in my old place 4 22 years ago. * I would like to say something - about it, but my husband says * I should wait. * I am wondering if his advice r is valid because it has always ; been my experience that if you * don’t speak up about conditions “ right at the start of a job, you . sometimes never get another £ chance to mention them. What ? do you think ? Mrs. J. B. Dear Mrs. J. B.: Tou are right that some things need to be settled at the time you accept new employment. But the equipment and procedures in an office don’t fall in this category. In this case, you will usually find that it is better to bide your time and do the best you can with

what you are offered for a little while. When To Act. Later, when you are a valued employe and a integral part of the office yourself, you can look for opportunities to suggest, in a tactful manner, new office machines and ways of doing things that would expedite the work you are required to do.

Five GE Plants Remain Closed NEW YORK UPI — Strike's over local issues today closed
five General Electric ’(GET plants that produce military necessities for Viet Nam, but a nationwide strike was averted. The International Union of Electrical Workers (IUE) voted overwhelmingly Sunday to accept an agreement with GE reached Friday by representatives in Washington. The vote was 450-116 among delegates to an IUE-GE conference board meeting. The vote of the board is binding on all IUE locals as far as the national contract is concerned. But each local negotiates its own supplementary pact with each GE plant and 24,750 mem-

bers of three unions walked out when their supplements expired at midnight. The struck plants are at Schenectady, the parent plant; Auburn and Utica, N. Y„ Evendale, Ohio, and Warren, Mich. The Michigan plant in a Detroit suburb does secret missile work and is the only producer of synthetic diamonds for cutting tools. Jet engines are produced at Evendale, a Cincinnati suburb. The Schenectady plant makes turbines for military installations, and the Utica and Auburn facilities produce military communications equipment.
The IUE represents the 12,000 who struck at Schenectady. The International Association of Machinists (IAM) is the bargaining authority for the 3.500 employes at Utica and the 1.500 at Auburn. The United Auto Workers (UAW) represent the 1,100 at Warren and the UAW and IAM have members among the 6,650 who struck in Evendale. A GE plant at Ashland, Mass., has been struck for the past two weeks. Plants at Pittsfield, Mass., and Decatur, 111., also were in danger of being struck but employes stayed on the job.
