NewljTveds Capture Tournament Titles By Alfred Sheimvold The most popular victories In the recent national tournament at Denver were those of Martin and Bettie Cohn, of Detroit, in the Mixed Pairs, and of Edwin and Phyllis Kantar, of Los Angeles, In the Open
Teams. The Cohns had been married just over a week and the Kantars for two months when they won their national championships. Mrs. Kantar won a precious point in the team championship by making an overtrick on the hand shown today. The point of play is good for rubber bridge

IS It safe to have X-ray treatments for the removal of excess hair on the face? About 40 years ago there was a period of great enthusiasm for this procedure. It took almost 20 years before skin cancers of the face began to appear in many of the people who had »»» had these treat5 ments. Undoubtedly, H these disastrous | results were due ; to the limited knowledge of the hazards of overuse of X-rays. Dr. Coleman Today, X-ray Is used by dermatologists (skin doctors) for a wide variety of conditions. In their skilled hands there is virtually no danger of overradiation. A recent case was reported in which ft woman was receiving X-ray treatment from two different doctors without letting either one know that she was being treated by another. It sounds almost impossible, but her zealous desire to be treated led her to this hazardous decision. The potential dangers to the skin are great when these treatments are used commercially and without expert medical supervision. • • • What is ft safe exercise for people over 60? Almost all exercise done in moderation is beneficial. The biggest threat is overenthusiasm or a desire to compete with the memory of one’s youth and thereby overdoing a sport. It is now recognized that
well-controlled exercise can even be of benefit to people who have recovered from heart attacks. Dr. Paul D. White, the eminent heart specialist, is most enthusiastic about bicycling as an exercise for the middle-aged, and even the elderly. There are now many indoor bicycles, mounted on a stand with a single wheel, that can be used for mild exercise. At an open window, a few miles a day helps circulate the blood, is invigorating and is free of any of the hazards of riding a bike on the open road or on the city streets. Why are nuts dangerous to children? Infants and small children frequently breathe a small nut, especially the peanut, into the lungs. This happens far too often and can cause severe inflammation of the lungs. Peanuts must be removed by bronchoscopy. This procedure and the danger of lung infections should establish a definite rule that children below the age of six are not sufficiently benefited by nuts to warrant this additional risk to their lives. • • • SPEAKING OP YOUR HEALTH — Springtime colds follow the premature shedding of warm clothes. Dr. Coleman welcomes letters from readers, and, while he cannot undertake to answer each one, he toiU use questions in his column whenever possible and when they are of general interest. Declarer drew two rounds of trumps with the ace and queen, but then left the last trump in West’s hand. South swtiched to the ace and king of clubs, since that would produce an extra trick if East could not ruff. This was the case, and Mrs. Kantar led a spade to the king, ruffed dummy’s last club, led a spade to the ace and ruffed dummy’s last spade. CONCEDES DIAMONDS Declarer had already taken the first nine tricks, and dummy still had two high trumps. She conceded two diamonds and claimed the rest, making an overtrick and winning the match. Declarer’s line of play could not cost her the contract. Even if East had been able to ruff the third club, Mrs. Kantar could go ahead with the rest of her plan and would lose only that ruff and two diamonds. Mrs. Kantar would not make the overtrick if she drew three rounds of trumps. That would leave her with one trump and two losers in each hand (in addition to the sure losers in diamonds). Since declarer cannot ruff two losers with only one trump, she would be held to ten tricks. DAILY QUESTION Partner deals and bids one heart, and the next player passes. You hold: S-A K 7; H-Q J 10 4; D-6 4; C-J 8 5 4. What do you say? Answer: Bid three hearts. You have 11 points in high cards and 1 point for the doubleton. You may also count 1 extra point for the strength in partner’s suit. This Is barely worth a forcing raise to three
hearts. If you were ft passed! hand and partner opened in i third or fourth position, you would jump to four hearts. (A jump raise by a passed hand is j not forcing).

A person who is willing to work at a second job in order to make life better should be a source of pride to a family instead of an embarrassment. It is true that in the past many people had a low opinion of those who held more than one job, and it is also true that the term “moonlighter” was originally applied to night riding brigands. But all of this has I changed in the present. The Department of Labor has made it clear that the close to four million job-holders now moonlighting are not apt to be working at jobs that unemployed people want, or could succeed at
necessity in your life—go to it. Where Opportunities Are

made into a movie. He's also thinking about opening a night
club in New York City.
“Acting ain’t really for me,” he said, rubbing his cauliflower ear. “My night club, Slapsie Marie’s, did good business here from 1937 until 1949, but Las Vegas knocked me out. It knocked out all the night clubs
in the west.”
Las Vegas’ record for kayos topped Maxie’s as a fighter. In 292 professional fights he knocked out only eight op-
ponents.

"In exchange she put me in her picture, ‘Nothing Sacred.’ I was so good in it that Jack Warner signed me to a contract. After four years at the studio Warner said everybody liked me but they couldn’t understand what I was talking about. “So he sent me to Max Reinhardt’s acting school to study dictation and electrocution sic . I met Marlon Brando there in 1942. He talked exactly
like me.
“Anyhow, I learned to talk good and went back to Warners’. You won’t believe this but three weeks later Warner fired me because he said it wasn’t the real me. Now that they could understand what I was saying they didn’t like what I said.” In the past five years Maxie has played the joints with a nightclub act built around parodies of his career and songs he has written himself. Brando plays a large part in his routines.
If you are an average moonlighter, you probably will put in approximately 13 extra hours a week. And you will find good opportunities to do this in the sales and service industries, as well as temporary employment agencies. Dear Roberta Roesch: I hgve been considering going to work as a practical nurse since I need an income. I am in my fifties and a recent widow, so I am wondering
I would not care to work in an office. Mrs. A. F. Dear Mrs. A. F.: If your physical strength is good and if you have the mental fortitude to spend your time taking care of sick people and their demands, practical nursing is a good job opportunity to seek. The work will not pay you a great deal of money, but it will provide an income and personal satisfaction, since you will be performing a service for which there is a great need. License Required To work as a practical nurse
you will need a license, so contact your local hospital, your physician, or your county medical association for information on the training and license requirements in your state.
