4 Th* Dally Bannar, Oraaneastla, Indiana Thursday, Octebar 6, 1966 Makes College At Last Parent Fingers Crossed

By ROBERTA ROESCH "By the grace of God and a few human miracles we have just shipped our oldest daughter off to college,” a reader from Connecticut writes. "It was touch and go until she was accepted because she is definitely inmature, and her marks are not in her favor. But her father insisted she must have a chance for some higher education, so we didn’t give up till a small western school accepted her application. Still Worried ‘‘Even though she is now in college, I worry that she won’t stay, especially since I’ve heard people say that approximately half of the young people entering college this fall will drop out before they get a degree. “Is this statistic true?” Unfortunately this 50 per cent casualty rate, which has been haunting young people, parents and American campuses for the past several years, Is the unhappy truth. However, according to the Institute of Life Insurance, evidence is gathering that suggests even when boys and girls drop out of college they stand a reasonably good chance of returning at some future time to collect their sheepskins. For example, a Pennsylvania State University study reports that 70 per cent of the college dropouts in the class of 1955 eventually earned some kind of degree or certificate of higher learning. Another Report Similarly, a University of Ulinoise study reported that more than seven out of tea young men and women who enter state - supported colleges and universities eventually acquire their degrees, although it may take 10 years. Actually, there are many reasons why some young people fail to complete college during their first round. Some leave because they discover, after a short while, that they have neither the motivation nor money to continue. Others drop out for marriage. Still more trade school for Job opportunities. Additional ones switch to something else when their marks are too low. Even such psychological reasons as low marks. Insufficient motivation, loneliness, immaturity, homesickness and disenchantment with college life do not mean that dropping out of college is the end of future opportunities. Neither do these reasons slam the door on a second chance, since a new kind of motivation sometimes comes with working and miraculously changes a former poor performer into a good future stu-

dent.

Many Students Who Drop Out Of College Go Back Later On There’s Still A Chance So, if you are the parent of a son or daughter who does not make the grade on the first round of college, don’t give up and decide all chances have disappeared for higher education. According to reports, it looks like the college drop-out, in ever-increasing numbers, is going back to get his degree.

Bridge Partner Is Joy Forever By Alfred Sheinwold If you are lucky, you know one bridge player in whom you have the utmost confidence. You can let him play the hand because if there is one way to throw the contract away he will surely find it. East took the first trick with the ace of diamonds and returned a diamond to dummy’s queen. Declarer led a low spade from dummy and won a finesse with the queen. (An expert would consider playing the ace rather than the queen, but this choice is a toss-up.) After West followed suit with the nine of spades South could make the contract in two dif-

ferent ways. In both cases the object is to guard against a bad trump break and limit the trump loss to one trick. One way is to return a low trump from the South hand.

Dummy's Jack forces out the king, and declarer can later lead a trump from dummy for a finesse through East’s 10-7. SECOND WAY A second way is to switch to clubs instead of continuing the trumps. East takes the king of clubs and leads a diamond to dummy’s king. Now declarer leads the jack of spades from dummy. East covers with the king, and South wins with the ace. South leads the queen of hearts to dummy’s ace to return a trump through East, and the contract is then safe. Either way, South loses only one trump, one diamond and one club. South found a third way to play the hand. After winning the first trump trick with the queen of spades South optimistically led out the ace of spades. After this hopeful play East was sure to get two trump tricks and the contract was doomed.

DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 1 NT (16 * to 18 points), and the next player passes. You hold: S-K 10 7 2; H-J 8 7 4; D-A 6 4; CK 6. What do you say? Answer: Bid two clubs, the Stayman Convention. This asks partner to show a major suit if he has four or more cards in spades or hearts (or both). If he bids a major, you will raise to four; if he bids two diamonds (showing no major), j you will jump to three notrump. I
