TV In Review
By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD UPI—Every time I hear supposedly worldly persons talk with optimism about the “upgrading” of television for “the minority viewer,” I am reminded of this verse from “Archy and Mehitabel”: “I once heard the survivors of a colony of ants that had been partially obliterated by a cow’s foot seriously debating the intention of the gods toward " their civilization.” Or, as another verse from the - same collection put it more succinctly: “An optimist is a guy that i has never had much exper- * ience.” * And this, of course, is why so ' many interested parties are giving the new "ABC Stage 67” series a push, despite its off nights, and why there is also * legitimate rooting for the promised major dramatic specials. For although the hucksterish base of commercial television makes overall “upgrading” an impossibility, it is extremely important for creators, advertisers and other allied fields to throw whatever weight they can behind any project that seems to offer an opening. "ABC Stage 67” has some advertising, but other sponsors . have stayed away in droves. The ratings have been predicably low, but unfortunately even ABC-TV promotion on the i series has been partly at fault here. It strikes me that the network made a wrong approach by stressing viewer “responsibility” rather than emphasizing fun, pleasure and excitement regarding “ABC Stage 67.'' You * can stress responsibility to r creators and advertisers seek- ? ing an image, but no viewer J wants to sit down in front of - a television set feeling he “ought” to watch rather than simply wanting to watch. I - confess the “responsibility” aps proach left me cold too. “Stage 67” is also getting a predictably bad time in the I ratings competition from NBCTV’s “I Spy.” The other competing series, CBS-TV’s Danny Kaye show, which can only be a depressing sight now to his longtime admirers, doesn’t offer much heat in the ratings ■ or viewer attraction. It is ret ported, by the way, that ABC- . TV was planning to have a reJ search firm do a study on what t segments of the audience watch I “Stage 67,” so that prestige— ‘ and higher-type sponsors could
be approached more specifically with more attractive bait, despite the low ratings — and this certainly makes a good deal of sense. On the other hand, one hears of enough disturbing storm signals concerning the permanent time-slot status of “Stage 67” to make one wonder whether such studies will be useless or obsolete before they are completed. The message is that ABC-TV is almost definitely going to have two movie nights in the future—meaning an added one—and that the second weekly motion pictures might begin this mid-season, and if they do they will most likely be scheduled on Wednesday, when “Stage 67” now is seen. The reason for this is that there are already network movies Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday — and ABC - TV’s Wednesday night shows seem weaker statistically than Monday’s. The result is that “Stage 67” might become a series of “floating” specials, scheduled at different times on different days in different weeks—or it might be shifted wholly to another permanent time-slot. Influential persons here tend to believe it would be the “floating” approach. Cancellation? The network would be crucified if It tried it.
SweJes Attack Submerged Sub GOTEBORG, Sweden UPI — Swedish marine helicopters Wednesday attacked a submerged unidentified foreign submarine which had violated Sweden’s territorial waters, the Swedish Marine Command have reported. The helicopters fired on and dropped a depth charge but the submarine refused to surface and headed out to sea, the command said. The command said a Swedish warship first detected the submarine in the waters off the heavily fortified southwestern coast and radioed an alarm. The anti-submarine helicopters, equipped with highly-sen-sitive sonars, tracked down the underseas vessel. The command said the helicopters did not fire directly at the submarine for fear it might be sunk. A depth charge was dropped about 500 yards away as a warning. The submarine did not surface nor did it identify itself. It changed course and headed toward the open sea. A few hours later, the command received a new alarm of an unidentified submarine operating in the area around the Poelsans Lighthouse near Vinga Island. The submarine refused to identify itself and proceeded to leave Swedish territorial waters. It was not known if this was the same submarine or a second one.

Johnson Plans Several Visits After Manila WASHINGTON UPI —President Johnson was expected to announce today that he will make the most far reaching Asian trip ever undertaken by an American Chief Executive. • The South Korean government said today Johnson would stop in Seoul Oct. 31 for a three-day visit, six days after the close of a “war and peace” summit on Viet Nam in the Philippines Oct. 24. In Australia, Prime Minister Harold Holt said Johnson would be in his country Oct. 20-22. There were strong indications that the President also would go to Thailand. The New Zealand government announced that Johnson will arrive in Auckland for a daylong visit Oct. 19 before flying on to Australia on the afternoon of Oct. 20. His visit will be the first by an American President to New Zealand. The Malaysian government announced in Kuala Lumpur that President and Mrs. Johnson would visit there Oct. 30. A statement said the invitation was extended by King Sultan Ismail Nasruddin Shah and his queen. The President will confer with Premier Tengku Abdul Rahman for talks on international problems, including Viet Nam, the statement said. In Tokyo, Japanese government officials told newsmen there were no plans for Johnson to visit there while on his Asian swing.
Fashion historians report wearing gloves first came into vogue as a means of covering the ugliness of dirty hands and nails. In an age before soap was common, even royalty depended on handsomely embroidered and perfumed gloves.

By JOHN D. PARRY PARIS UPI—Tunisia’s break of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Republic puts the final touch to a relationship that has been in a state of deep freeze for 18 months. Tunisia’s President Habib Bourguiba started the downhill turn in Cairo-Tunis relations in early 1965 when he called for the Arab countries to come to terms with Israel. This led to the mob burning of the Tunisian ambassador’s residence in Cairo, withdrawal of the ambassadors and full diplomatic staffs of the two countries in April, 1965, and an unceasing campaign of press and radio attacks on both sides. Chadli Klibi, Tunisia’s state secretary for cultural affairs, announced the break in relations Monday and said it was taken because of “the disparaging campaign against Tunisia by Egypt.” Quarters here, however, said that Tunisia might have other reasons for the sudden break. These quarters noted the Tunisian press and radio frequently spoke in recent months of “Nasserite plots” against Tunisia in general and Bourguiba in particular. Tunisian - Egyptian relations have blown hot and cold for a
decade. Within a year of Tunisia’s gaining independence in 1956, Bourguiba was attacking U.A.R. President Gamal Abdel Nasser for letting Salah Ben Youssef, Bourguiba’s long-time political foe, use Radio Cairo to attack him. Ben Youssef was later assassinated and the U.A.R. claimed the killing was the work of Bourguiba’s agents. In 1958 the first break In diplomatic relations occurred after Tunisia accused Nasser of sending “emissaries of death” to kill Bourguiba. A Tunisian attack on the French naval base at Bizerte in July, 1961, and the bloody fighting which followed provoked a wave of sympathy throughout the Arab world. The U.A.R. moved toward a rapprochement with an offer to send troops to fight alongside the Tunisians. The offer was not accepted. Later that year diplomatic contacts were resumed and they reached a peak of cordiality Oct. 15, 1963, when Nasser rode at Bourguiba’s side through cheering crowds celebrating the first anniversary of the evacuation of the base by the French. Bourguiba repaid the visit by going to Cairo in February, 1965. He was received cordially by Nasser, but within a few
weeks the two nations were feuding again. Bourguiba said in a speech in Beirut the Arab countries should accept the existence of Israel within the boundaries set by the United Nations in 1948 if the Israelis, in turn, would agree to receive the 1,200,000 Palestinian Arab refugees liv-

ing In Jordan, the Gaza Strip, Syria and Lebanon. The speech prompted wild anti-Tunisian demonstrations in the Arab world, including the attack on the Tunisian ambassador's residence in Cairo.
