One of the most distinguished producer-directors, Preminger Is walking around in a jump suit; his bald head and face painted blue, his lips purple and his eyebrows a bright red. In his role as Mr. Freeze, Preminger menaces Batman and Robin by freezing them, meanwhile keeping his own body temperature at a chilling minus 60 degrees. It’s Preminger’s first acting job since he played a Nazi officer In 4< Stalag 17” back In 1952. The question is, why has the Austrian-born Preminger returned to acting? "Bill Dozier Batman’s producer mentioned it to me several months ago,” he said. "And I agreed. My twins, Mark and Vicqtia, are six years old and have talked about nothing since. "So I’m going ahead with It I'm enjoying the whole thing. Maybe it would be a good idea for other directors to take acting jobs once in a while to se® how early actors get up in the morning.,, Preminger reports at the studio at 6:15 a.m. and spends an hour and a half in make-up. He works until 7 pjxu - An imposing, dominating figure on his own sets, Preminger is a pussycat on the Batman stage. He takes orders like any other actor. His lines are perfectly memorized. He’s always on time. But on accepting the job Preminger learned that he was $11,000 arrears in his screen Actors Guide dues. Because he has poured many thousands of dollars in dues to the Directors Guild, the union reduced his back payment to only $100. ‘T was told the role would take four or five days,” he said. "But it could run as long as seven days. I accepted the part for a lump sum, so there will be no extra pay involved.” After spending the day as Mr, Freeze, Preminger — in costume and makeup—runs to the editing rooms at MGM to i complete his latest movies, "Hurry Sundown.”

"It is much easier being an actor than a director,” he admitted, “you just take orders. They tell you where to stand and what to say. You become a child again. It’s play.”

Pope Appeals For Viet Peace VATICAN CITY UPI — Pope Paul VI appealed Tuesday for a negotiated peace in Viet Nam. “Never should we grow weary of considering and taking up this theme, since it concerns the dizzying gamble with the fate of mankind,” the pontiff said during a 1,400-word address to about 250.000 persons massed in St. Peter’s

Square.

The Pope spoke at an outdoor mass marking the first anniversary of his historic plea to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. "War no more, war never
