COATESVILLE NEWS
by Joe Davidson, Correspondent
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hanlon and family, Mrs. Mary Hubble and Miss Jill Hubble spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Brown and family at Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Hathaway were Sunday afternoon callers on Mr. and Mrs. Rex
Hathaway and family in Indianapolis. Mrs. Edith Buffo was a Sunday dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Allen of Belleville. Since 4-H Week is with us it might be well to say a few good things about 4-H. It starts a lot of boys and girls to doing
worthwhile projects that bring rewards to them, their family, and their state. It sets up keen and good sportsman-like competition among members and is an incentive that brings as a future reward successful farmers and farm wives. In Bible times there were two brothers who might well represent a good 4-H’er and a slacker type. Abel came to God with his offering that was acceptable, but Cain brought a shabby one. Once in so often there comes a 4-H boy or girl who at show time jerks up the first cabbage that comes handy, picks any old kind of beans and shows a plate of potatoes that are scabby and
that’s It. When the Judging is over, Abel has a fist of blue and red ribbons and a big desire to do better next year but Cain says, “Never again! I worked all summer and didn’t win nothin’.” Most 4-H boys and girls are Abels and do their best. A ladies club known as The Help One Another Quilters met with Mrs. Edna Smith one day the past week. There were ten members present and they spent the day at quilting and embroidering. A carry-in dinner was served at the noon hour with Mrs. Ethyl Barker giving thanks. Mrs. Doris Wright of Indianapolis was a guest.
Mrs. Vivian Sutherlin, Ethel Ader, Helen Jones and Edna Smith drove to Danville, Illinois, and Chrisman Sunday. Kinsmen of Mrs. Martha Stewart report that she is in a Richmond, Indiana Hospital suffering from a serious heart ailment She has been hospitalized for several weeks and shows but little progress toward recovery. Mrs. Grace Gambold spent the the past weekend as a visitor in the home of her sister, Mrs. O. B. Garner of Brownsburg. The Greeneastle School sent two football squads to Cascade this past week. In a game between the two junior high
teams Cascade proved to be the winner by a score of 14-7. In the game between the 9th and 10th year boys the Cadets again showed the mettle of their pasture by winning 7-0. The local fire department was called at 4:20 Thursday afternoon and headed north on Road 75. At the Mrs. George farm a Nabisco truck had gone out of control, hit a large tree and was on fire. The driver, Howard Hickling, 23, of Indianapolis, with the truck’s motor, had been thrown to the east side of the road following the impact, and there he had died from gasoline burns. The truck had skidded 223 feet before hitting
the tree. The driver had started to Amo but had failed tq turn on the Coatesville-Amo road northeast of town. The body was picked up by the Weaver Ambulance. I have before me a "Complete Arithmetic” used in our state schools in 1890. On the back cover are book prices "fixed by law” at that period. First Reader .10; Second .15; Third .25; Fourth .30; Fifth .40; Elementary Arithmetic .35; Complete Arithmetic .45; Elementary Geography .30 and a Complete Geography .75. The complete arithmetic was for 7th and 8th grades and here is one sample problem from the last page:
"A can do a piece of work to 12 days; B can do the same in 16 days; and C in 24 days. They all worked 3 days when C left: 2 days afterward B left: How long was A In finishing it? Ans. 1% days. You might try this, problem and test the answer. Friday evening Mrs. Helen Jones of Greeneastle was a dinner guest of Mrs. Edna Smith. Monday night Mr. and Mrs, Joe Davidson, accompanied by the Coatesville librarian, Miss Olive Bourne, and John Garobold, a board member, attended the county-wide library meeting held at the Danville Public Library.
