Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church Although comparatively new to this area, Peace congregation represents the largest Protestant denomination in the world. Born with the seeds of the Reformation in 1517, the Lutheran Church has sent missionaries to all corners of the world to carry the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Lutherans arrived in America with the Dutch West Indian Company in 1623, when they settled in what is now Albany, New York. Since that time they have been instrumental in the civic and social scenes of our country, as well as holding religious positions of respect. At the present time in the United States the Lutherans are behind only the Baptists and the Methodists in population figures. Peace congregation was organized as a mission of Indiana Lutherans in 1956. It has grown from a handful to a healthy congregation which now numbers more than 100, and it is still growing. The Lutherans are distinguished by their adherence to the basic Reformation teachings of: 1. Alone by grace (the grace of God has saved us without our own efforts), 2. Alone by faith (we need only believe in Christ to be assured of heaven), and 3. Alone through the Scriptures (only the Word of God can serve as norm for our teachings). This congregation will soon begin construction of the building shown above. With its worship-centered sanctuary and classroom space designed for expansion this new $105,000.00 home of the Lutherans in Greeneastle will be the answer to the hopes and dreams of the small band who brought their church to this area. Upon completion the public is most cordially invited to visit. The building will be open daily for meditation. The current pastor of Peace congregation is the Rev. Robert F. Andersen.
