SPUTTERINGS

By Walter L Johns, Central Press Sports Editor

SOUTH BEND, Ind.—They’re still talking about the Irish soph pair of quarterback Terry Hanratty and end Jim Seymour following their spectacular debut in college ball for Notre Dame here last weekend. But they also saw another fine quarterback, Bob Griese, of Purdue, and they knew that he was a great one. Hanratty, with bullet-like heaves to end Seymour, certainly was one of the big stars of the game, his first with the Irish, but Griese did a fine job, too, adding to his AllAmerican rating of last year and possible Heisman Trophy bid this year. Griese couldn’t engineer another victory over the Irish, like he did last year when he completed 19 out of 22 passes for a spectacular one-man show, but he continued to be the workhorse of a rugged team which couldn’t match the charging Irish line and the aerial fantastics of Hanratty and Seymour. • • • THE HANDSOME Griese, who will make some pro team happy when he graduates next June, is the most complete football player you can find around. He does everything and Is the “triple threat” they used to tag backs with in the old days. Despite being on the losing end against Notre Dame, Bob did complete 14 of 26 passes for 178 yards and picked up 34 yards running with the ball. The Irish defense was so tough he had to scramble with the ball 15 times. Additionally, he did the punting, kicked two extra points and tried one field goal which missed. All in all Bob handled the ball 50 times, not counting handoffs, by running, passing, kicking. That’s a pretty good afternoon for anyone. • • • GRIESE, who is in industrial management at Purdue, worked most of the summer on his passing, in between some construction work on the Purdue stadium. He practiced going to the left and throwing outside and in his first two games he bas shown he can do just that. He gets the ball away quick, throws it accurately, and is a fine scrambler. And he can run, too. He appears to be good pro material. Bob says that he hasn’t seen any of the offers, that coach Jack Moilenkopf is keeping them for him. He credits Boh DeMoss, Purdue assistant, and a great passer himself in his playing days, with teaching him the mostest. DeMoss la non-commital except to say that Bob “made himself into a helluva quarterback.” This is Griese’s third year with the Boilermakers. Prior to this season he has completed 218 out of 394 passes for 2,653 yards and a flock of touchdowns. He’s from Evansville, stands €'1* tall and weighs 184 pounds.

Cubs Lose Greencastle’s football fortunes took a nose-dive Monday evening at the hands of the Cascade Cadets. The seventh and eighth grades fell before the Cadets 14-7, and freshman squad could do no better and were blanked 7-0. In the grade game, Cascade scored first on a long pass play,

but the Junior Cubs tied it on a touchdown by Gary Gram. But Cascade went on to score another TD to wrap up the game. The freshman team engaged their rivals in a bitter defense struggle with neither team being able to penetrate the other’s goal line until penalties aided the Cadets to push across the game's only score.
