COATESVILLE NEWS by Joe Davidson, Correspondent
Sunday afternoon the Coates-Ville-Amo MYF drove to the Eventide Nursing Home and gave an hour’s program to those confined by age, sickness and accident. The program consisted of Bible reading, prayer and the singing of several well-known hymns. This was a kind and
thoughtful gesture on the part of the MYF and its leaders. The program was enjoyed and appreciated by those for whom it was given. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Knight, Mrs. Beulah Knight, Mrs. Marguerite Hodson and Mrs. Grace Gambold were Sunday afternoon
callers at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Davidson. Part of the afternoon was pleasantly spent in viewing the many colored pictures taken by Mrs. Davidson while on a sixteen day trip across Montana, Glacier and Yellowstone Parks and visiting several cities of the Pacific Northwest. After the passing of Mrs. Eva Lineberry of Stilesville, her will left to. the Coatesville Public Library some seventy or more volumes that had been the property of her scholarly grandfather, Abner Miller. Nearly every volume is well bound, many of them in leather and the dates of their publishing
range from 1848, 1850, 1860 and some 1895. Among the more prominent volumes are a leather-bound Bible, a Treatise on Algebra, Draper’s Philosophy, Pinneo’s Grammar and 19 volumes of leather-bound encyclopedias. In all these books the print is extremely small. It was interesting to take a look into Pinneo’s Grammar since this was the text book used in the Madison, Indiana School when father was a pupil. That was more than 100 years ago. The following were guests of Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Wingler Sunday to take part in a family reunion dinner: Mr. and Mrs. Randy Whittaker, Paul Walker
and Ms. and Mrs. Robert Walker and family of Cloverdale, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Deem & son, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Deem and daughter of Greencastle, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Noble and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wingler and daughter of Indianapolis, Mrs. Leona Wingler of Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Deem of Houston, Texas and Mr. and Mrs. Junior Wingler and family. A note found in an old book and dated December 2, 1897, stated that one Thomas Campbell had paid $12.00 for 40 bushels of com. Com was cheap, money was dear. Mrs. Edith Miles, age 46, of Amo died suddenly Friday of a
heart ailment. She leaves, besides her husband, Robert, three boys and two daughters. One son is in the U.S. Army, another in the U.S. Navy. For a long time Mrs. Miles has been librarian at Amo, handling books sent from the Coatesville Library. She was a cheerful and efficient librarian and had many friends who will miss her counsel on books. Her funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Weaver Funeral Home, and burial was at Stilesville. Mr. and Mrs. George Masten left town on a week’s vacation to Gatlinburg, Tennessee in the Smoky Mountain National Park.
They expect to be home Friday or Saturday. Mr. Donovan Davis of Indianapolis was calling on some former friends in town Wednesday afternoon. A few older citizens recall him as the son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Davis who moved to Capital City at least fifty years ago. Donovan has been in Coatesville but a few times In all these years. He is now on retirement. Friday. September 23rd was the advent of autumn. Let us hope that days ahead are beautiful, with cool nights for sound sleep followed by dreamy, hazy, Indian summer days until near Christmas. This is the time of
colored leaves, golden papmws, falling hickory nuts and walnuts, the scent of ripened apples. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale in a new book makes It pretty plain that a “Don’t” psychology seldom gets good results but promotes rebellion. Drivers of cars have had “Don’t do this and don’t do that thrown at them several millions of times without stopping reckless driving. The town that put the following positive statements on the outer edge of town likely got better results. The two statements read: “Drive slow and see our town; drive fast and see our (Continued on Page 5)
