Thomas Acquitted By Ala. Jury HAYNBVILLB, Ala. UPI—A predominantly Negro jury refused to convict Ku Klux Klansman Eugene Thomas of the nightrider slaying of Mrs. Viola Gregg Liuzzo, a white civil rights worker. The jury, comprised of four whites and eight Negroes, the first ever tq sit in judgment of s white man in Alabama’s black soil belt, acquitted Thomas after 90 minutes of deliberation Tues-

day night.

Alabama Atty. Gen. Richmond Flowers, who earlier had called the Negro jurors “Uncle Toms,” angrily termed the verdict “exactly what I thought it would be when I came up here." Defense attorney Art Hanes, a former mayor of Birmingham, — said he was “elated. I feel the evidence warrants the verdict." The verdict was announced at T p.m. and brought the first smile of the trial tq the face of

Thomas.

“I’m glad it’s over with,” said the 42-year-old steel worker from the Birmingham suburb of

Bessemer.

The state had charged Thomas with murder in the March 25, 1965, shooting of Mrs. Liuzzo, 39, a white civil rights worker from Detroit following the Selma - to - Montgomery voting rights march. But two expected key state witnesses, FBI informer Gary Thomas Rowe and Leroy Moton, a Negro youth riding with Mrs. Liuzzo when she was slain, ^ did not appear at the trial.

Plan Changes In Next Spacewalk

SPACE CENTER, - Houston UPI—Drastic changes in the spacewalk of Gemini 12 astronaut Edwin (Buz) Aldrin may delay the flight as much as two

weeks.

The space trip is set for late October or early November. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said plans for Aldrin to use a jet-powered Buck Rogers type “back pack” to scoot around in space during his space walk had been abandoned. The change was made to allow a better study of the problem of free space walking — an exhausting chore that caused Gemini 11 astronauts Richard F. Gordon to cut his space walk short Sept. 13. NASA officials said they wanted to “gather more information concerning the performance of basic tasks by an astronaut in orbit outside a space-

craft.”

Space walking so far has been

lems of the nation’s space program. Three of America’s four spacewalkers have been forced back in their spaceships before finishing their walks.

Besides his family, he is survived by one brother, Ralph, of Phoenix, Ariz., and leaves a host of friends and relatives to mourn his passing. Jesse expressed his wish to get well and care for his wife and family. He always welcomed Rev. Lone who came to pray with him. WASHINGTON UPI —West German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard flew home early today with a compromise agreement that will cut German requirements to buy 81.35 billion in American arms. The agreement, hammered out during Erhard’s tour of Cape Kennedy Tuesday with President Johnson, calls for arms purchases of 5450 million before June 30, according to German officials. The officials said another 5650 million of the arms buying commitment — purchases which help offset the cost of keeping U.S. troops in NATO—would be fulfilled by prepayment of 5214 million in debts to the United States, and a $436 million purchase of U.S. government bonds. The remaining $250 million of

the commitment will be subject to U.S.-German negotiations. There was a possibility that the June 30 deadline for meeting the buying quota would be extended. The deadline comes with the expiration of a two-year U.S.German agreement aimed at offsetting U.S. costs in Ger-

many with German arms purchases in this country. Officials said the economic impact of U.S. troops stationed in Germany on the balance of payments was the key question in the talks which Erhard described at his departure as “very serious and very tough negotiations.”
