Don’t Aim For Comfort In Choosing Your Lead By Alfred Sheinwold
Most bridge players have the mistaken notion that the best opening lead is from a suit headed by A-K-Q, K-Q-J, or Q-J-10. There are comfortable opening leads, but comfort and effectiveness don’t always go
’ together. South dealer

„„ Opening lead — 4 Q West made a comfortable spade lead and woke up too i.-Jate. Declarer won with dummy’* king of spades and returned a club to his king. West might have recovered if he had played his low club without seeming to think. Actually, he stewed for several seconds and then refused the
club trick.
South didn’t have to be hit over the head to work out the meaning of West’s hesitation. Declarer led a low club, and West won with the Jack. West shifted to a trump, but it was too late. East took the ace and returned a trump. South won and ruffed a club in dummy, setting up the rest
of his suit.
Now South got to his hand ' with a spade to draw the last trump, after which he could claim the rest of the trumps and chibs. Four hearts, bid and
made.
REVEALING BIDDING West had heard North ex-
press a decided preference for hearts over clubs. Bidding of this kind usually indicates trump length with a side singleton or doubleton. The best de- . fense, usually is to lead trumps * Immediately to reduce dummy’s
ruffing power.
West should lead a trump, and this opening lead would defeat the contract. East takes the ace of hearts and returns a heart. When West get in with the ace of clubs he leads a third heart, thus taking the last trump out of dummy before South can ruff a club. South must give up two club tricks in addition to the two red aces, and West scores 100 points instead of losing a 700-
point rubber.

The combined count (with your 10 points) must be 26 to 28 points, which should be enough for game in notrump but is unlikely to be enough for game in diamonds.

Property Tax Delay Indicated INDIANAPOLIS UPI—A delay of a month or longer is likely in certifying the 1967 property tax rates in order to permit the legislature to enact what advocates claims is “the only way to get 100 per cent pure porperty tax relief.” The full impact of a meeting on the state’s 390 million general fund surplus of Governor Branigin, House Speaker Richard C. Bodine, Lt. Gov. Robert L. Rock and other state and legislative Democratic officials last week with the party’s platform committee became clearer today. Indiana State Tax Commissioner Larry Mohr told newsmen that a plan, for which he gave considerable credit to Bodine, is awaiting action by Branigin. He said the plans calls for the governor to formally request the State Board of Tax Commissioners to hold up finalizing any property tax rates until Jan. 20. ‘The only people who would be hurt by such a delay are the county auditors and the State Board of Tax Commissioners,” Mohr said. "It will be a substantial inconvenience to our board, and county auditors would have to do the same amount of work in half the time they usually have.” But Mohr said that the Democratic leaders of the legislature and others backing the plan felt “it is about time someone is inconvenienced in order to give property taxpayers relief.” “This is the only way to get
in his address of the reconciliation between his country and Indonesia. Shortly before he spoke, Indonesian President Sukarno disclosed in Jakarta he has ordered Indonesia back into the UN. He pulled the country out when Malaysia was seated on the Security Council. But Indonesian strongman Gen. Suharto apparently pushed the issue and decided Indonesia should return. Razak pledged Malaysia’s support of the proposal by Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos for an all-Asian meeting on Viet Nam. Razak stressed the meeting should aim only at bringing the belligerents to a conference table — not at suggesting or imposing a solution to the war. The General Assembly was 1 settling down to business with a 95-item agenda to be dealt with before Dec. 20, the closing date i of its new session.
The Man From The BANNER
Save hours by putting yourself under pressure. As this column has said on many occasions, if you have an hour to do something, you do it in that time. But if you have all day for it, you may not get it done. Therefore, a fair amount of pressure is good for us all when we want to accomplish things, since organized | pressure makes us accelerate the speed at which we work, gets us into a driving spirit and discourages the interruptions we let happen when pressure is not our slave driver. Save hours by doing more than one thing at once. Many successful people get things done this way. Mary Lyon who founded Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., for example, used to write letters and attend to business matters while sitting in her kitchen waiting for the bread she baked to brown. George Bernard Shaw always read while he dressed and un-
; dressed.

Why not try that yourself?
When you’re working at unnecessary, so come to your home, keep your current proj- own decisions on that. But once ects out in the open so that you you’ve made this decision, solve can plug away at them when- at least part of your “time” ever you have a few minutes problem by stealing from unim-
