Under a current twoyear agreement, expiring next June 30, the Germans are committed to buying $1.35 billion worth of U.S. arms to offset this outflow. The United States has made it clear several times that it wants West Germany to continue such purchases after the agreement expires. But Erhard was expected to tell the President that West Germany is not able to continue them at anywhere near the present annual level of about $675 million. It was understood that he would seek a reduction of about 50 per cent.

Singleton Is Often Effective Slam Lead By Alfred Sheinwold Players all over the country are practicing with their partners for the rubber bridge tournament in Las Vegas early in October. This a fine idea, but for most people practice is a way of repeating the same mistakes. The big boner in today’s hand is typical. South dealer North-South vulnerable

to hope that your partner has a singleton in that suit. For example, in today’s hand. West should lead the ace of diamonds and continue with another diamond. East gets the ruff he would have sought if he had been the opening leader, and the slam goes down. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one spade, and the next player passes. You hold: S-6 2; H-Q 8 7 4 3; D-5; C-Q 6 5 4 2. What do you say? Answer: Pass. You have only 4 points in high cards and should not count anything for 1 distribution when you have only two cards in your partner's bid spade suit. You would be happy to respond if partner had opened with one heart, but it is unsafe to respond to one spade.

They pointed put that the government’s tight economic policy to fight inflationary tendencies, increasing taxes, the alarming housing shortage in big city areas and agricultural policy. A new aspect of the election campaign was the “truce” being kept internally between the three non-socialist groups. The Center party and the Liberals even joined forces, deciding to put issues on which they internally disagree on ice. With the voting age lowered from 21 to 20 there were 383,000 new voters, and many observers said the Social Democrats do not mean much to many of the young people.

Hollywood News
HOLLYWOOD UPI —Perhaps the most perilous movie being filmed today is the delightful children’s tale “Doctor Doolittle.” The danger lies in some 1,200 animals, most of them wild, working In close proximity to star* Rex Harrison, Samantha Egger and Anthony Newley. The Fauna includes lions, tigers, elephants, rhinoceroses, foxes, hippos and scores of others. The stars are protected as ! far as humanly possible, although Harrison rides a giraffe in one scene. And the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals safeguards the beasts. But the trainers, and more than a dozen are working in the picture, must fend for themselves. Most are experienced circus hands who know the game, but accidents are unavoidable. Trainer Tony Gentry was almost killed by one of the elephants. “I was loading a four-ton female elephant into a truck when she picked me up in her trunk and began chewing my leg,” he related during a lunch break at 20th Century-Fox. “She threw me around like a sack of potatoes and began to trample me. She knocked out my teeth, broke five ribs, broke my shoulder and foot and chewed my leg to th(» bone. In 45 years working with elephants I never saw one try to eat man before.” Don McLennan of nearby Jungleland, which supplies most of the animals, said the greatest problem was preventing the predators from devouring their natural prey. “We raised foxes and rabbits together, for example, to accustom them to working together,” he said. “But it’s still risky.” They also stuff the predators with their favorite viands just before shooting. Thus a lion can walk past a deer on the set, sleepy eyed and with a full belly. The difficulty lies in trying to convince the deer that Leo s appetite is indeed sated.

your singleton suit or the ace does not affect the setup of the

suit.
Do not lead a singleton against a slam when you have Bn ace in your own hand. It is most unlikely that your partner also has an ace. Look for an attacking lead of some kind. In some cases your best lead is the ace of a long suit, es-
