Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church The Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church of Cloverdale was organized by Rev. John Cord in the home of John Macy, and in this home was held the first religious meeting in Cloverdale Township, in the year 1824. The same year a log Church was built, Sec. 1 Twp. 12 N. Range 4 West. The ground for this building was given by Yubal Meadows. This Church was used until 1848 when a frame Church was erected east of what is now State Road 43 just east of where the Cloverdale Hardware Store now stands. This Church was used until 1873 when a larger frame Church was built on the site of the present brick Church. The contractors who built the frame edifice were Howard Hart, Hiram Macy, J. F. Bryant, Marion Thompson, Hiram Gilmore, Thomas O’Daniel, and J. W. O’Daniel. All of these men were members of the Church. In 1905 the Church was remodeled. The front door was moved from center front to the northeast corner. A gallery was added and a class room in the rear. Rev. R. W. Raaf was the Pastor and Dr. L. F. Dimmit was District Supt. at that time. On Sept. 8, 1941, about 4:00 P.M., this Church was destroyed by fire. A move was made at once to rebuild. Services were conducted in the American Legion Hall while the new building was being constructed. The American Legion gave free use of their Hall until the new Church was completed. Rev. A. L. Meredith was the Pastor during this time. The first work on the present building was started March 19, 1942. Mrs. Luella Jordan gave a piano for the basement and Mrs. Virgel Rogers gave one for the main auditorium, August 4, 1942. The pew and other furnishings were installed and August 9th the first Sunday School and Worship were held in the new building. On August 15 the Women of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service began having the sink, stove and cabinets installed in the kitchen. Also, they had table service for 100 given by Mrs. Mellie Linley. Mrs. James Sipple was President at this time and Mrs. Ralph Fry was Vice President. On October 4, 1942, the Church was officially dedicated by Dr. John Benson, clear of all debt. Mr. Estes Duncan, being a very faithful member, willed the Church a sum of money when he passed away, and in 1952 the members began raising enough finances in addition to Mr. Duncan’s gift to erect four classrooms. The following committees were appointed: Building Committee — Cletus Suit, Glenn Furr, Bert Hamilton, Ralph Fry and Mildred Cassiday. Fund Raising Committee — James Sipple and Adeline Knoy. On October 10, 1954, the annex was dedicated. Since that time many very valuable gifts have been given by members, one of the latest being the new carpet which was given by the Currie Family in memory of their Husband and Father, Joe Currie. A new electric organ was installed in 1965. The former Homer Morrison residence was purchased for a parsonage in 1957. The membership is very happy to have Rev. James Bastain as Minister at this time.

The ways in which spiritual reality is revealed will be studied in several Bible passages, including these verses from Exodus and Galatians: “Behold, I sent an Angel before thee, to keep thee In the way, and to bring thee into the place which T have prepared.... We through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.” A corresponding passage from the denominational textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy, gives this definition of angels: “God’s thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality.”
