When this hand was played In a team match some years ago one declarer took the first trick in dummy with the king of diamonds and tackled the trumps by leading the ace and then a low trump. It seemed very natural and pretty safe. Nothing bad could happen if East had the king of trumps or if West had the ace of spades. As luck would have it, both cards were in unfavorable position. West took the king of hearts and led the ten of spades, whereupon the defenders defeated the contract by taking three spades. TAKES FINESSES The other declarer took a better view. He needed entries to his own hand for finesses in trumps and in clubs. Since he had no particular need of diamond tricks he could afford to overtake dummy’s king of diamonds with the ace. South then led the queen of hearts for a finesse. West covered with the king, and dummy’s ace won. South led a trump back to his hand and led the ten of dubs for a second finesse. The clubs were well placed, and South managed to get five club tricks. He was able to get rid of the three losing spades, after which he could ruff a spade in his hand and then ruff his own low diamond with dummy’s low trump. The second declarer wound up with thirteen tricks, four more than the first declarer. It was a big bonus for winning the first trick in the correct hand. Bargain Hunting Advice To Ease Budget Squeeze

By ROBERTA ROESCH "With the high cost of living plus a family of five children to clothe, it became obvious several months ago that my husband could not handle everything alone,” a wife and mother told me. "So, when a fairly good Job opportunity opened up in my neighborhood, I took it with the idea that I could use my paycheck to buy the clothes for our family. Anticipated Shopping “At the time I started to work, the Job seemed like the answer to our never-ending need for clothes, so I really looked forward to buying the items we had been missing, and finding bargains in the stores near my job. "But now I find clothing prices have increased while my time for shopping has decreased. So I still can’t make ends meet. "How do other working wives manage to find the time to go to the stores and pick up the bargains they need for a growing family?” To get some advice on bargain shopping from a man who is in a position to know, I sought the help of David Cohen, president and chairman of the board of one of the fastest growing chains of stores in the country. On the basis of more than 20 years experience, Cohen compiled these pointers to offer working wives who need them: Make Tour list Buy off-season. List the things you know you will probably be buying within the next six months, or even a year. Saving of 30 to 50 per cent can be obtained in this manner. Read labels. This is one of the most Important habits any shopper can and should acquire. Today’s laws on labeling are your best protection for bargains In clothing, say, since manufacturers are required to explain clearly the fiber content of the materials. Sacrifice service. Being waited on hand and foot Is fine If you can afford It, but be assured you are paying for it Stress style, not fashion. There is a difference between a fashion fad and a smart basic

If Tou Lose Valuable Time In Crowds, It’s Not Any Bargain style. Make it your business to learn how to detect the difference. Also, copies of original dresses designed by some famous designer often look as good as the original to the average person. Buy in quantity. The real economy often represented by the large economy size can be applied numerically. Standard items such as nylon stockings, men’s or children’s socks should be bought in quantities ranging from at least two pair to six of the same color. Here again you can save 10 to 30 per cent. Timely Reminder Remember that time Is important. Find out where you can shop conveniently, where prices are competitive and where crowds aren’t so heavy that it takes twice as much time to get something as it should.
