The Presbyterian Church

wkmiamr >1, mjim

of Greeneastle was organized in August, 1825, by the Rev. Isaac Reed, a circuit rider, with twelve members. Services were held in a Methodist log church until a one story brick building was erected in 1836, which is still standing at the corner of Columbia and Jefferson

Streets.

From 1850 to 1870 there was a split in the denomination which resulted in two Presbyterian churches in Greeneastle, one of which was purchased by St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church. In 1879, the Roberts chapel, built by the Methodists in 1847, was purchased by the Presbyterians and is still serving the congregation at 110 S. College Ave. It was completely renovated in 1963. In 1923 an education building was erected, providing for a Sunday school, dining room, and kitchen. The Presbyterian Church belongs to the Reformed family of churches which separated from the Roman church in the sixteenth century, and came to America by way of Scotland and Ireland during the early years of colonization. The church actively supported the nation’s drive for independence, including the Revolutionary War; therefore, it is no coincidence that American Presbyterianism governs itself by a representative democracy. Presently the Presbyterian Church carries on an extensive missionary program, participates in the ecumenical movement, and supports the effort for social justice and civil rights. Its emphasis on the sovereignty of God in Christ over all of life, sacred and secular, has been a hallmark of the church over the years. The Greeneastle Presbyterian Church has about 260 members, and its pastor is the Rev. Tom Heinlein.

NOTICE The Banner is now featuring an article highlighting the history of the churches that appear on the church page. Some ministers have been contacted by phone and others by letter Inviting them to feature their church. However, since some addresses of church officials are unknown and all churches do not run programs, The Banner would like, through this announcement, to invite all church leaders to send us a history. All that is necessary is a S’/a by 3% inch picture (anything larger cannot be used) and a page and a half of typewritten material (if possible), double spaced. The scheduling of the articles is done upon receipt of the copy.
