IHSAA Considers Playoffs In Three Additional Sports
No Major Changes In Start of 500 Mile Classic
INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Indiana’s high schools are being Bounded out this fall to determine the feasibility of adding baseball, gymnastics and tennis championships to their athletic program. ISHAA Commissioner Phil N. Eskew said a questionnaire to that effect would be mailed as soon as possible to all member schools. “We’re attempting to find out If they are interested in participating and if so, if they have the facilities for such tourneys,” Eskew said. He added the schools will also be polled regarding the dates for such playoffs. “We’re thinking of baseball playoffs the first week in June and for the finals by around June 20," Eskew said. A baseball championship appeared to have the best chance of receiving IHSAA backing. Records show that 589 schools of a total of 655-including associate, junior and preparatory members-played baseball last year. By scheduling additional championships, more athletes will gain recognition, Es k e w said. “Baseball would be a great game and a lot of colleges emphasize both baseball and tennis.” A baseball tourney would be run off along the lines of the state basketball tourney, starting with 64 sectionals, followed by regionals, semi-finals and 4team finals, the latter probably at spacious Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians of the Pacific Coast League. The ISHAA now sponsors state championships in basket-
ball, cross - country, wrestling, swinmming, track and golf but not in football, a season that overlaps with basketball. An All-Star football game pro motion several years ago limited to seniors folded, presumably because of lack of statewide interest.

INDNANAPOLIS UPI— The Auto racing fraternity apparently turned thumbs down Thursday on recommendations for major changes in the start of the 500-mile Speedway auto race. The United States Auto Club has received numerous suggestions for changes since the illfated start last May 30 when a spectacular first-lap pile-up wiped out one-third of the 33car starting field, although none of the drivers was injured. Car owner Gordon Van Liew, Houston, Tex., flatly blamed the slow pace for the 16-car chain-reaction collision in full
Youth Injured in Football Game
MEMPHIS, Tenn. UPI—Mike Driver, 17, a high school football player formerly from Bloomington, Ind., remained unconscious and in critical condition today after undergoing brain surgery. Driver was injured in his first football game here. Doctors said Driver was operated on for blood clots on both sides of his head, apparently received by some blow during the game. Driver walked from the field Thursday night after running 15 yards in a drive that led to a touchdown for White Station which won the game 28-14. He later became unconscious while stretched out next to the players’ bench. Coach Ken Floyd said he would study the game films to see if it could be determined which blow stunned the youth. “Mike is a unique boy. He has a real fine personality and is a hard worker,” said Floyd. “He sold himself to the kids at school right away.” Driver’s father moved here from Bloomington in July to take a job at the Radio Corporation of America plant.

view of many thousands of race fans. We suggest that the pace car pull off the track one lap earlier and that the pole-winner lead the pack on the flying start. There had been suggestions that the starting field be lined up two abreast rather than three abreast, or even single file, but Van Liew and others agreed these methods would only add to the problems of a safe start because “the guys in back would be even more in a hurry trying to get up front.” “Besides,” said Van Liew, “the three-abreast start is traditional at Indianapolis and we
ought to retain it.”
USAC’s rules committee discussed a variety of other racing problems with drivers, mechanics and car owners before going into a closed session. Whatever recommendations are adopted by the committee will be forwarded to USAC’s board
