Says Pageant Is 'Pure Corn' ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.—UPI —The Miss America Pageant is “pure American corn.” That’s the description awarded the pageant by its executive director, Albert A. Marks, Jr. It's also his explanation of how the pageant has grown from a boardwalk leg show designed to sell salt water taffy into a multi-million dollar year-round business.

“It’s pure American com and I we’re proud of it,” Marks explained during an interview. ‘‘This type of com—the allAmerican girl variety — has “made the country grow,” he; said. Miss Lenora Slaughter, the softspoken southern who’s guided the pageant into its present prominence, was quick to agree. It was under her direction that the onetime beauty-only contest became big enough to finance a fund which has distributed | more than $6 million in scholarships.

No matter what name the pageant goes under — com, schmaltz or just clean cut entertainment—it sells. For nine of the 11 years that the Saturday night finals have been televised, they’ve garnered the year’s top “special” rating. This year, according to its promoters, should be no exception. They predict some 100 million viewers will tune in.

TT. S. ambassador to Luxem-1 bourg and to the Ivory Coast, has been named special assistant to the secretary of state for refugee and migration affairs, it was announced Tuesday.

House Democrat Leader Stricken WASHINGTON UPI—House Democrtaic Leader Carl Albert suffered what was described as a minor heart attack Tuesday. He was taken to nearby Bethesda Naval Hospital. The 58 - y e a r -old Oklahoma lawmaker suffered chest pains after arriving for his work at his capitol office. After an examination he was taken from his office by wheel chair. His office announced he had suffered a “minor coronary occlusion without complications.” His physician said Albert would require complete rest for the next several weeks, according to Albert’s office. A statement isued by his office said Albert’s attack followed “a hectic eight month legislative session and a weekend foray of packing and yard work prior to moving from his house in Washington to an apartment.” Albert, his wife and their 11-year-old son David ar'e moving into smaller quarters with the departure of their daughter, Mary Frances, for Rice University.

Teachers Return At Fort Wayne FORT WAYNE UPI — All teachers returned to their classrooms today in Fort Wayne public schools for the first day of the fall semester, but there was some doubt about how long at least 1,148 of them might remain. These 1,148 of the system’s 1,500 teachers have not signed contracts yet in their dispute with the school board. They met Tuesday, voted to be on the job today and then filled out an “opinionaire” in which they gave their prefer-

ences from eight possible alter-, natives listed. They ranged from mass resignation to asking investigation of the situation by the Indiana State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. Results of the “opinionaire” were still to be tabulated. The teachers adopted a resolution which said they would “return to our classes expecting early official action of the school board on a professional negotiating agreement, restoration of the index salary schedule, recognition of the association Fort Wayne Teachers Association and competency of our membership in developing school policies and programs.”

The Daily Banner, Greeneastle, Indiana Wednesday, September 7, 1966

Although salaries are a point of contention, the main controversy has ranged over how much voice the teachers should have in determining policies affecting the classrooms. Robert Wyatt, executive <Jirector of the ISTA, invited by the FWTA as an observer, said teachers should be involved in making decisions affecting their profession, in the same way doctors and lawyers are. One of the points of disagreement was the contract form which the school board has offered to the teachers. The teachers charged the school

board has "abandoned” the us« of a legal contract form.

OBITUARY P Peacefully sleeping, resting at last The world’s weary troubles and trials are past. In silence he suffered, in patience he bore Till God called him home to suffer no more. Roy Virgil Terry, son of John W. and Amanda Buis Terry was bom in Putnam County, Indiana, [ July 22, 1890. He passed away | at the home of his son Aug. 29, 1966 at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 7 days. He was married to Hallie Grimes in 1912. To this congenial union were born 2 sons. Dennis and Carl and 2 daughters, Rosella and Fern. They labored together in the rearing of their children and found much happiness in life from simple living on the farm. Their home was always open to welcome neighbors and friends. In it was found old time hospitality. One son, Carl, passed away i in 1941, then his wife died in 1954. After this he remained in the home of his daughter Fern, ‘ until he became so afflicted that he needed more care, so he has spent the last 2 years at the home of his son Dennis. But all their care and good medical care could not stay the j Grim reapers hand. Needless to; say his suffering was great, but j he bore it as a good soldier and greeted his visittors with a smile and joyful conversation without complaint. He lived an upright life, was honest in his dealings with men and when able to attend church enjoyed hearing The Gospel preached and the singing of old time songs. He leaves to mourn his passing the son Dennis, two daughters, Rosella and Fern. 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Also 5 sisters and a host 1 of relatives and friends. Somewhere beyond the rainbow’s end, The skies are bright and fair No darkness dims—No showers falls. The land Is peaceful there. And someone with the power to heal, To guide and understand Is waiting there to calm our fears, and take us by the hand. So when a dear one heeds His call, Our hearts should be at rest For there beyond the rainbow’s . end, Our Loving God knows best.
