Thoughtful Partner Reads Strange Signal By Alfred Sheinwold The normal way to discourage your partner from continuing with a suit is to play the V lowest possible card. You can A vary this procedure if you and your partner have confidence in each other. West led the deuce of diamonds, and East won with the king, thus making it clear to West that South had the queen of diamonds. East continued with the ace of diamonds, and West had the problem of persuading East to shift to clubs. It would do no good to drop the nine of diamonds since from East’s point of view West might have started with Q-9-2 of diamonds and a trump trick. East would probably continue

the highest diamond In the West hand clarified the whole situation. REMEMBERS LEAD East happened to be Don Krauss, a member of the U. S. Olympic bridge team in 1964. East also happened to remember the opening lead. West could not have the doubleton J-2 of diamonds since then he would have led the jack. West could not have Q-J-2 of diamonds since then he would have led the queen. “Just remember how the name is spelled,” Krauss remarked as he switched to a low club. “It’s a long time since I made the column.” “Lucky for you that you found the right play,” West remarked as he took two club tricks to defeat the contract. “This hand was going into the column even if you missed the point.” As you can see, the bridge is pretty good even if the conversation doesn’t exactly sparkle. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one spade, and the next player passes. You hold: S-9 6 4; H-8; D-A K 6 5; C-9 5 4 3 2. What do you say? Answer: Bid two spades. You hate to raise with only three very small trumps but the only alternative is to respond one notrump with a singleton. As a choice of evils, the raise is better.

Securities Sale May Be Limited WASHINGTON UPI — President Johnson is considering a move to limit the sale of government securities on the open market in an effort to bring down skyrocketing interest rates. The Chief Executive disclosed Monday that he may postpone taking advantage of the Participation Sales Act recently passed by Congress at his administration’s request. The measure would permit large private combines to purchase several billion dollars in government-owned loans. But the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, now studying inflationary pressures, may classify such sales among the measures which could overheat the economy. “We are now determining
whether we should limit certain sales of government securities in our private sector in the hope that by doing so we can bring about a reduction in interest rates,” Johnson said. The President alsc said the administration ’ is looking for “ways to cut down on all nonessential spending in the private and in the public sectors.” The Chief Executive did not elaborate on what methods may be used, but there have been persistent reports in Congress that he may back a move to suspend indefinitely the 7 per cent business investment tax
credit.
The tax credit, first installed during the Kennedy administration to stimulate the economy, i provides that businessmen may | deduct from their corporate ; taxes up to 7 per cent of the I amount they invest in new plant and equipment. Many economists believe this credit to be a principal infla-
tionary factor In the economy, though there is doubt that its suspension at this stage would do much to combat such a condition.
Two Officers Are Kidnap Victims CAMDEN, N. J. UPI — Two Camden policemen were kidnaped at gunpoint and driven off in their own patrol car Friday when they reported to a housing project to investigate
a robbery.
Police said Sgt. Relio Ferrari, 40, and Patrolman Doug Tydeman, 47, were kidnaped by three other men seen driving off with the police officers in a squad car.
The patrol car was found abandoned with its motor running a short distance away. Police said the bandit-kidnapers had another car waiting for them there and probably
switched to it.
A police alarm was issued for a green Chevrolet, believed to be the vehicle in which the two policemen were held captive.

Could This Be What You Have Been Consciously or Unconsciously Hoping For? 1. A Church that is not bound to denominational or council decrees but is instead dedicated to the Lordship of Jesus the Christ and the grace, freedom and power of His Spirit. 2. A church that imposes no human creeds or opinions upon men, but rather bases its common life upon the plain teaching of God's word. 3. A church that is not preoccupied with economics, politics and social systems but rather seeking first the Kingdom of God and the mind of Christ, knowing that such will correct social injustices, perfect government at every level and alleviate the suffering of poverty. INTERESTED? Then plan to meet with others of the same mind at the public meeti :g room of the Greencastle Federal Savings and Loan Association at 8:00 Wednesday evening, September 7, 1966. WHY? For the purpose of pioneering in the establishment of a church that will be ''Christian Only".
