Thi Daily Bannar, Graancastla/ Indiana Friday/ Saptambar 2, 1966 St. Andrew's Episcopal Church

CHURCH OF CHRIST At Haw Creek 1 mile north of Roachdale 10:30 Morning Worship 8:00 Thursday evening service

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Greencastle was founded in 1938 by a group of local residents who first met for worship in the Phi Kappa Psi house. Years before there had been an Episcopal Church, St. John’s, in Greencastle; one family of the present St. Andrew’s belonged to the previous church. St. Andrew’s first permanent location was a house on South Locust Street. In the 1940’s the parish was a home away from home for the boys in the V-12 program then located on the DePauw campus. The present church, located at the corner of Seminary and Bloomington Streets, was dedicated October 19, 1952. The building was made possible by a generous gift from the Lilly Foundation and by years of planning and working on the part of the congregation. The church was dedicated “to the Glory of God” for service to “the Community and the University.” The Episcopal Church is part of the world-wide Anglican Communion, a fellowship of national self-governing churches in communion with the Church of England. The history of the Episcopal Church in the United States stretches back to the arrival of English colonists at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. The Episcopal Church is often called the “bridge church” because it is open to both Catholic and Protestant traditions. Emphasis is put upon freedom of thought and expression, upon the Sacraments and particularly the Sacrament of Holy Communion, and upon letting the Gospel shed its light upon modern life. St. Andrew’s is a part of the Diocese of Indianapolis, whose Bishop is The Right Reverend John P. Craine. The clergy of the parish are The Reverend Gordon Chastain, one of the many young men who decided to enter the ministry while a student at DePauw and a member of St. Andrew’s, and The Reverend John Eigenbrodt, who is on the faculty of DePauw.
