Phan Thiet is still one of those cities essentially inhabited by Vietnamese. Although there is a U.S. advisory team stationed here, as yet there are no actual combat troops working out of the city. Because it is not a key military point at the moment, Phan Thiet is placed low on the list at aircraft stops. Most flights run by the Military Assistance Command do not even stop at the small airstrip outside of Phan Thiet. Visual Reconnaissance flights are flown in Binh Thuan by air force and army pilots. Occasionally they fly to Saigon. There is a provincial repre-

sentative for the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) working out of the city. Every Saturday he is “given” a helicopter to fly to other sections of his province, places he could not travel to by land because of the Viet Cong. There also is a flight to Phan Thiet by Air America, contracted by AID. However, this flight provides the traveler a tour of most of the central highland area and the beaches of Nha Trang, all even further north from Saigon, before stopping at

Phan Thiet.

One recent flight to Phan Thiet flew past Phan Thiet, stopped at Nha Trang, then

Banmethout, the Montagnard capital, then the resort town of Dalat, back to Nha Trang, then to Phan Rang, a U.S. Air base on the coast and finally, as it was getting dark the plane landed at Phan Thiet as U.S. Phantom jets were attacking a Viet Cong force raiding a village two miles north of the

town.

Though comparatively near to Saigon, Phan Thiet is at the other end of a highway patrolled by Viet Cong guerrillas. Any traveler who dares to venture along the highway, Vietnamese as well as American, would be certain to meet at least one band of guerrillas.

Prom a Vietnamese, the Viet Cong would exact taxes. From an American, probably his life. This is the story for much of Viet Nam. The only way to travel anywhere is by plane. The roads still belong to the Viet Cong.

him they were confident the malignant area was removed completely. The younger Murphy said, “tests indicate the surrounding tissue is healthy and there is no need for further surgery.”
