LETTER
to the EDITOR
Dear Editor: On August 15th, The Indianapolis News had an article on the recent activities of the Du Bois Club at I. U. which stated, “The club has been operating on the Bloomington campus all summer, held an open organizational meeting on campus, recruited new members, and plans to bring young Communist spokesman Bettina Aptheker to the university for a speaking engagement in the fall.” Also, the article stated, I. U. President Elvis Stahr in a letter to the Indiana American Legion Convention, claimed the L U. chapter of the Du Bois clubs “is not presently operating on the campus; its activities ceased at the close of the second semester . . Look what happened at the University of California at Berkeley. Do we want that to happen in Indiana ? As Tax Payers, we should demand a definite ruling from the L U. Board on their convictions in this matter. Concerned
Dear Editor: A number of members—S3 of us in fact, would like to comment on numerous happenings that have been taking place at the New Providence Cemetery. A resident of Greencastle comes down to the cemetery a few days after our Memorial Day and burns all the flowers on the graves of our loved ones Including soldiers who have served their country. This occasion comes but just once a year and all the members, friends and neighbors from a great distance come at this time at year to pay respect to their loved ones by bringing flowers, most of them big baskets and wreaths of artificial flowers, that they have paid a nice sum of money for. Tet we cannot leave them on the graves for a few days until this man comes down and burns them in a bonfire. And what’s more after being approached by these members on numerous occasions about burning the flowers he doesn’t even care or apologies, but calls the flowers trash. He is a Sunday School teacher and a Deacon of the Church but doesn’t keep the Ten Commandments. Some of the grave markers have been removed and also some of the markers to the lots. We want to ask the public, What should be done to a man like this? If a teen-ager had done this we know what the offense would be, yet we let an adult get by. We would like to hawe some answers regarding what should be done about this offense. Members of New Providence Cemetery.
