Hand-Hooked Area Rugs Have Unique Appeal

By ROBERTA ROESCH Dear Roberta Roesch: How can I find out where to get a job on the Project Head Start Program in my area? Does this organization have paying jobs or are most of the openings for volunteer workers ? J. W. Dear J. W.: Opportunities to work for Project Head Start vary in different parts of the country. In some cases, jobs are paying ones, since trained professional people are needed for the program. In other instances, there are volunteer jobs. Needs Varied Since there is a variation in what is needed and available in different sections, all people who are interested in Project Head Start should write directly to the national headquarters. Project Head Start, Office of Economic Opportunity, Washington, D. C. 20212. Dear Roberta Roesch: I am interested in selling hand-hooked rugs. I have been making these rugs for several years, and I feel sure that I will be able to sell them through a shop in town that specialize in handicrafts. If they sell, I plan to continue making them. Profit Expected Naturally, I’m expecting a fair-sized profit, since I’ve put a great deal into these ruga But several people have told me that I shouldn’t expect to earn much more for handhooked rugs than the price people are used to paying for ma-chine-made rugs in the store. la this right? G.D. Dear G.D.: _ If your rugs have a quality that makes them unique and more outstanding than the best machine-made rugs available in the stores, you can expect to earn a little more from them because they are hand-made. Tou’ll also earn more if you take orders to custom-make them for the special needs of future customers. But on the whole you have

The Agriculture Department’s weekly weather and crop bulletin said the spring crop of small grains showed good progress in the northern Great Plains while soybeans improved in the lower Mississippi Valley and the Southeast. The com belt reported nearnormal crop development.

Hand-hooked rugs made for special needs are more salable. to expect that even though a customer will usually pay a little more for hand-made items most people aren’t prepared to pay as much more for handmade artides as you’d like to think they will. With the competition that all the stores offer this is a realism you must face. OPPORUNTITY FOR THE DAY: Don’t let yourself stop at the “half-Finished” mark when you’re working toward an aim. Instead go on until you have achieved what you set out to do.

ON THE Farm Front WASHINGTON UPI — A big dty congressman took on a large segment of the nation’s 3.2 million farmers when he proposed recently that the government impose a 90-day price freeze on certain food staples. Under the proposal—which isn’t given much chance-Rep. Leonard Farbstein, D-N. Y., would leave it up to Agriculture Secretary Orville L. Freeman to name the food items to be controlled. A price freeze might sound good to the housewife, but the American Farm Bureau Federation, the nation's largest farm organization, says such an action would merely “punish farmers.’* The laws of supply and demand would come into play, a Farm Bureau spokesman said, eventually affecting prices at the farm. He called Farbstein’s proposal “a diversion of the real i*»ue—a lack of money management” Wet weather improved crop conditions in the farm belt this past week.
