Prisoners Riot Seeking Drugs WALPOLE, Mass. UPI —
Drug-seeking inmates rioted Friday night, injuring 11 guards at the Walpole State Prison hospital. They surrendered to rifle-carrying state police after becoming “pretty hopped up”
on tranquilizers and narcotics. • The knife and club wielding! prisoners attacked the guards | after an inmate was denied! additional medication. The out-! break left one guard seriously | injured and 15 convicts in soli-1 tary confinement. Talking over a hospital wing, the inmates held three guards as hostages for more than an hour before surrendering to heavily armed police and prison officials. Prison authorities said the riot erupted about 9:30 p.m., EDT, as some 40 prisoners waited in the nightly “pill line.” One inmate demanded additional medication, but was refused. He tipped over a dispensary cart outside the hospital door and yelled to his fellow prisoners to join him.

Rights March In Windy City CHICAGO UPI — Open housing demonstrators and Chicago officials today felt they had passed a major milestone. Dr. Martin Luther King’s marchers — more than 700 strong — Friday evening ventured into a potentially explosive all-white neighborhood, paraded through the streets to three realty offices where they prayed then left. No major incidents were reported. Thousands of white residents — most of them teenagers — jeered, cursed and threw rocks and bottles at the demonstrators. More than 1,000 policemen, some of whom had been sworn in just hours before and were on their first assignment, surrounded the marchers and scattered the groups of youths who tried to block the path of the anti-bias marchers.
