i Th« Daily Bannar, Oraaneattla, Imilana Thursday, August 11, 1966 Making Right Decisions Requires Proper Timing
By Roberta Roesch I’m a wife who keeps family photopraghs underneath our four-poster bed while I take my time, as I’ve done for 15 years, to decide where I want to put them and how to arrange them best As you can imagine some of our relatives whose pictures are filed in dust have dropped such hints as “You take too long to make decisions.” Sheer Delight But I’m still not ready to rush into things when I don’t know what I want so I discovered it was sheer delight to interview singer Eileen Farrell and learn that the soprano’s philosophy for careers and everything else is to take her time every step of the way without rushing into things. ( “As you can see, this applies to putting up pictures in my home, too,” she said in her easygoing, friendly manner, when I visited her in her New York apartment before she left to vacation in Maine with her husband, son and daughter. “As far as careers go,” Eileen said, “I’ve never rushed into anything in mine. I have found it has always worked out best to think about things and know I am ready before I move from one stage to the next.” Started In Radio As she built her career on this thinking, Eileen got her start in radio and worked up to her own program “Eileen Farrell Presents.” Then in 1947 when she felt ready for another step she moved to the concert stage and made the first of the concert tours she has continued ever since. Later in 1955 when Eileen was ready for another move she agreed to sing the title role in the American Opera Society’s Town Hall production of the almost forgotten opera “Medea.” The rave reviews from that performance made people start asking why she’d never sung in opera. The reason, of course, was wrapped up in the fact that Eileen had taken her time. But after the success of “Medea” she knew the right time had come to add opera to her sing-
jazz. And, as she can, she adds television to her versatility. Unhurried Pace “But I’ve never rushed into
any of this," she said. *Tve taken my time about every step. “And as I said at the start,” she concluded, when her 12-year-old daughter came into the room and settled beside her in a big easy chair, “I believe in following this philosophy in homes, families. Jobs and careers, or anywhere else in life. “You usually find when you take your time' to decide what you want and how you should do it you end up with something that’s right.”

Throws Game Away By Needless Risk By Alfred Sheinwold Some bridge players don’t care what they do as long as they have a name for the play. South called his a “calculated risk,” but both the calculation and the risk were needless.

South put on his best thoughtful manner and tried a finesse with the queen of hearts and retur the s suits from this play but he got consequences. West won with the king of queen fo hearts. He expected reing out the ace. When South eventually led diamonds the defenders defeated the contract with the rest of the hearts. SHOULD TAKE ACE South didn’t need the heart finesse and should have hoped to get through the hand without ever having to risk it. He should take the ace of hearts at the second trick and lead the queen of diamonds to knock out the king. If West continues hearts, South gets a second heart trick. If West leads anything else, South has nine tricks with three spades, three clubs, two diamonds and one heart. The need for a finesse in
hearts would arise only if East had both top diamonds. When South takes the ace of hearts and returns a diamond, East might then win and lead a second heart. Even then South would still be able to put up the queen of hearts and hope for the best. It doesn’t pay to refuse all finesses just because an opponent leads the suit. It does pay to refuse a finesse that you don’t need and may never have to try. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one heart, and the next player passes. You hold: S-A K 9 H-4 2 D-J 9 3 2 C-Q 8 4 3. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid one notrump. You would like to make a stronger bid with your 10 points in high cards, but the hand is not suited to any other bid. If partner bids two hearts, you may indicate your strength by bidding two notrump—a slight overbid.

karno, army strongman Gen. Suharto, and three other members of Indonesia’s ruling inner cabinet presidium before the ceremony. The peace document was still another setback for the 65-year-old Sukarno whose foreign and domestic policies have been gradually repudiated one by one by Indonesia’s new military regime under Suharto. Sukarno was saying as late as last month that his “crush Malaysia” campaign would continue. One surprise in the document, which became effective immediately, was a provision that Malaysia hold general elections “as soon as practical” in its two disputed territories of Sabah and Sarawak in North Borneo to reaffirm the wishes of the people to remain a part of the federation. Prime Minister Shifts Cabinet LONDON UPI —- A dramatic cabinet reshuffle all but over shadowed today the government’s bitter fight to push Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s wage-price freeze bill into law. Wilson, Wednesday night announced a six-minister cabinet shift minutes after the House of Commons approved the controversial prices and incomes bill by a vote of 272-214. The majority was a substantial 58 votes, but the ruling Labor party has a 96-vote edge in Parliament. The biggest cabinet shift was the appointment of Chief Deputy Prime Minister and Economics Minister George Brown, 51, as foreign secretary. He replaces Michael Stewart, 59, who will take over the economics ministry portfolio. The changes involved no new faces. Appointment of Brown as foreign secretary was interpreted as a sign Wilson was planning a concerted bid for British entry into the European Common Market. Brown is the architect of Wilson’s prices and incomes program. Brown also pushed the prices and income legislation through the commons despite a relentless attack by the opposition Conservative party and more than 20 turncoat Laborite leftwingers who bolted the party by abstaining from votes on the bill. The measure now moves into the House of Lords which under normal circumstances would mean almost automatic passage. But lively debate was expected from the peers because of the bill’s eontrover1b. 19.75-20.75. House Action On Rights Measure Praised By LBJ WASHINGTON UPI — President Johnson Wednesday praised the House-approved civil rights bill as “an important new milestone”. He urged the Senate to follow through on it promptly. But while he commended the measure, which the House passed 259 to 157, the President expressed regret that its open housing provision was “not as comprehensive as that we proposed and sought.” Press Secretary Bill D. Moyers told newsmen he was “sure that the original proposal is still as desired by the administration as it was.” This indicated that strong efforts would be made in the Senate to come closer to the total ban Johnson had requested on discrimination in sale and rental of housing. Johnson, in a statement, said that even though the house diluted this proposal the significance of what it did approve “is

“Practically, the House has barred bigotry in all new housing and in apartment houses. This opens major avenues toward fair and adequate housing for millions of citizens. “Symbolically, the House has, in effect, declared to all Negro
Americans that many of their fellow citizens believe it is wrong to deny anyone a decent place to live solely because of the color of his skin. The House has also declared that the law should be an instrument of justice in this cause.” The fair housing provision, aimed at North and South
alike, promises to give the rights measure rough going t B the Senate, which is expected to take it up later this week. It took the House a recordbreaking 12 days of debate before final passage.
