US. Coast Guard I State Receives
Cutter Fired Ou SAIGON UPI — American planes today attacked a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, mistaken for a Communist vessel, as it patrolled without lights off the northern coast of South Viet Nam. Two U. S. seamen were killed and five other men wounded, military spokesmen said. The cutter USS Point Welcome was strafed as it moved along coast about 435 miles north of Saigon. The incident occurred less than two days after American planes killed 24 civilians and wounded 82 in an attack on a village in the Makong Delta. Among the wounded were three crewmen, a Vietnamese and a freelance correspondent, Tim Page, 22, a British national who has been wounded twice previously in Viet Nam. They were taken to the northern city of Hue, 400 miles from Saigon. The Point Welcome was “mistaken for an enemy contact by a patrol plane which called in a flare ship and an air strike on the cutter," U. S. military spokesman said.
Plan Holiday Safety Drive INDIANAPOLIS UPI — A special campaign in Indiana to try to cut the Hoosier traffic death toll over the Labor Day weekend will concentrate on the use of seat belts, with the theme, “Buckle Up and Live!" Albert Huber, executive director of the Indiana Traffic Safety Council, said studies of fatal automobile accidents have shown that a majority of them happen within 25 miles of home. “Thus we are encouraging Hoosiers to buckle up every time they get into their cars, whether it’s a short trip to the grocery store, around the corner, or to church,” Huber said. An TtuHrhs. State Police study of 515 fatal automobile accidents in which 630 persons died last year showed that 47 per cent probably would have survived the accidents if they had been wearing seat belts.

Heavy Rainfall Thundershowers continued today to dampen the eastern Gulf states and occurred along a stationary front extending from Texas to New England. Thunderstorm activity dumped locally heavy rain on Ohio and adjacent areas Wednesday night. Power lines, telephone wires, trees and barns were toppled by severe winds in western Ohio. Swooping from the west across the Indiana state line, storms dumped as much as two inches of rain in some areas. Wilmington was slugged with 1.60 inches and nearby Columbus received an inch and a half. In the Southwest, more than an inch of rain resulted from a thundershower at Dyess Air Force Base near Abilene, Tex. Clear skies, meanwhile, prevailed over most of the western and northwestern states today. Warm weather continued over much of the nation, except for continued coolness in the area from the Central and Northern Plains to the Great Lakes region.

CAN tuberculosis affect any other part of the body besides the lungs? The lungs are by far the most common site for active tuberculosis. Almost every other organ and tissue in the body can be infected by the tubercle bacillus, the germ responsible for this disease. It is comparatively rare for tuberculosis to ■trike the larynx, intes- | tines, bones and bladder unless there is also a severs tubercuDr. Coleman lous infection of the lung. This is a good moment to emphasize the fact that tuberculosis is still a very widespread disease. The remarkable control and cure of this devastating condition during the past 20 years is based on earlier recognition by regular X-rays of the chest

Can the feet become swollen without a kidney or heart con-
dition?
Sometimes perfectly healthy adults can develop swelling of the feet and ankles without any serious heart, circulatory or kidney disease. Occasionally women develop such swelling during their premenstrual periods. This type of accumulation of fluid in the feet is called gravitational, or positional, swelling
(edema).
Characteristically the feet be-
come swollen towards the end of the day. After a good night’a rest the feet once again return to their normal condition. It is important that all possible causes for such swelling be investigated. The heart, kidneys, liver, endocrine glands, blood circulation and varicose veins can all be studied to be sure that no serious reason foe swelling of the feet is present • • • Can air conditioning be responsible for summer colds? Summer colds have been attributed to many different things. Air conditioning is only one of them. There are many people who insist they are “allergic” to air conditioning and that they sneeze as soon as they enter a cold room. This is entirely possible. Some highly sensitive people even develop hives after exposure to any cold. A “cold” is caused by a germ or a virus. Perhaps severe chilling of the body by an airconditioner may lower one's resistance to infection and invite a cold. • • • SPEAKING OF YOUR HEALTH—Don’t swap symptoms and drugs with friends and neighbors.
