Dn The Lighter Side WASHINGTON UPI — Do«ens of reporter* have been dill* gently digging up tidbit* about Luci’s wedding, but it wa* a member of Congress who scored the biggest scoop of the week. By dint of arduous research. Rep. Robert McCory, R-Hl., uncovered a startling piece of information which he revealed in
a newsletter to his constituents. "Never before," McCoy wrote, "has a resident of Illinois’ 12th Congressional District married a daughter of the president of the United States." McClory’s disclosure sort of left me at a loss for words. And when I am in that condition, I always turn to Shakespeare, who had a word or two for every situation. By shamelessly rearranging some of Shakespeare’s lines, I have pieced together another one of my fabricated Interviews with the immortal Bard:
Q. What brings you to Washington, Mr. Shakespeare? A. “Mark'd I were the bolt of Cupid fell: It fell upon a litthe western flower.’’ Q. I see. You came here for the wedding. That Nugent is a lucky man. Isn’t he ? A. “He hath indeed better bettered expectation.” Q. How do you suppose a resident Of Illinois’ 12th Congressional District managed to win the hand of the President’s daughter? A. "He was wont to speak plain and to the purpose. That man that hath a tongue, I say, is no man if with his tongue he cannot win a woman.’’
Q. Yes, but Nugent had to conduct his courtship under the eyes of the Secret Service. How did he overcome that handicap? A. “Speak low when you speak love.” Q. Do you think it was a case of love at first sight? A. “No sooner met but they looked; no sooner looked but they loved; no sooner loved but they sighed; no sooner sighed but they asked one another the reason; no sooner knew the reason but they sought the remedy.” Q. How do you account for the fact that Luci is getting married before her older sister, Lynda?
A. “The ripest fruit first faUs.” Q. Would you describe for us the 700 guests who were lucky enough to receive invitations? A. “The wealthy curled darlings of our nation . . . rustling in unpaid-for silk.” Thank you, Mr. Shakespeare.
WALL STREET chatter NEW YORK UPI — William A. Kent of Philips, Appel & Walden feels that some indivi-
dual issues ars having their own bull market while many others decline. The analyst says money is being made in the not-so-conservative Stocks while big blue chips are gradually losing ground. He says quality stocks do not insure profits or guarantee against loss.
William E. White of Homblower A Weeks Hemphill, Noyes says the statistics Of odd lost trading, usually representing the small and inexperienced trader, show a growth in pessimism but generally an excess of public bearishness following sharp declines can be regarded as the forerunner of a
technical recovery.
Goodbody A Co. feels that along with the Viet Nam war, the tightening credit problem and renewed fears of a tax hike, traders now have to face the defiance by the machinists’ union of a White House sponsored settlement in the airline strike.
