The nation’s top young golfers and entries from Puerto Rico, Panama and Canada teed off today in the first round of the

annual Jaycees National Junior golf tournament. A total or 199 young golfers,

all under 18 years old as of ■! Aug. 1, were competing for the title in the 72-hole tournament on the par-71 Sedgefield Country Club championship course, site of the Greater Greensboro

Open golf tournament.

Only Maine and Alaska failed to enter the tournament The participants were selected in Jaycee tournaments across the

nation last month.

After the 36 holes, the championship flight in the medal play tournament will be reduced to the low half of the field.

32 Finalists Vie For Title BLOOMINGTON UPI — Qualifying rounds began today in the Western Junior Golf Championship, with match play among the 32 finalists scheduled to begin Thursday and end Saturday. John Richart, Ann Arbor, Mich., will be defending his title won last year at the University of Iowa. Richart, 19, barely made the age limit this year in his bid for a second straight championship, a feat accomplished only three times previously in the 49 tournaments. Richart, who is exempt from qualifications, is one of 15 finalists last year who will be back in the field of 238 swingers this year. The only players to win consecutive Western Junior titles were Fred Haas. Jr., New Orleans, 1934-35: Ben Downing, Monroe, La.. 1940-41, and Dean Lind, Rockford, HI., 1949-50. Richart is the first defending champion in the field since 1960 when Steve Spray of Indianalo. Iowa, failed in his bid for rf second straight crown. Players will fire 18-hole qualifying rounds today and Wednesday over the Indiana University and nearby Cascades golf courses. Match play will be on the IU | course when the field is pared to 32. In addition to Richart, the field will include last year’s runnerup, Jim Herring, of Amarillo, Tex., and semifinalist Greg Pitzer, Westwood Village, Calif. Other entrants include Tommy McGinnis, Memphis, Term., and Tom Kalbfleisch, Louisville, wlio finished 1-2 in the International Jaycee tournament last year, and Terry Dear of Albuquerque, N. M., who won the men’s Southwestern Amateur crown at the age of 17.
