Seeks Support For New Regime
LAGOS, Nigeria UPI — Lt. Col. Yakubu Gpwon, a young British-trained army officer, sought to rally Nigeria behind his new military regime and quell fears of tribal and religious civil war. Gowon, 31, announced Monday over the government’s Lagos radio station that he was assuming leadership of the 55million persons — Africa’s largest — following the overthrow of Maj. Gen. Johnson AguiyiIronsi by an army mutiny of northern region Hausa tribesmen. When Aguiyi-Ironsi came to power in a military coup last .Tan. 1, Gowon was named the army’s chief of staff. Gowon, a Hausa, said AguiyiIronsi — popularly known as “Big Johnny Ironsides” — was taken prisoner Friday by dissi-
dent troops at Ibadan, In Nigeria’s western region. He said he did not know the fate of Aguiyi-Ironsi, of the eastern region Ibo tribe. The revolt erupted Friday when dissident Hausa troops clashed with government soldiers at Abeokuta, 50 miles north of Lagos. It soon spread to Ibadan, the western region capital, and spilled over into Ikeja, on the outskirts of Lagos. The Hausas, who are predominantly moslems, feared that predominantly Christian tribesmen from southern Ibo and Yourba sought to dominate the Hausas’ northern region. The spectre of religious civil war has hovered over Nigeria since long before it obtained independence from Britain in 1960.

State Moisture Report Made
LAFAYETTE, UPI — State climatologist L. A. Schaal reported today that “good showers” last week placed northeastern and south central areas of Indiana in an above-normal precipitation position for a fourweek period. "Rainfall of the past week averaged from .5 in the north central division to 1.8 inches in the south central division,” the weekly report said. “Central and east central divisions averaged .6, northwest and northeast areas had .7, the southwest reported .8 and the southeast was second highest with 1.3 inches. "Those amounts place the northeast and the south central above normal in four-week totals by 1.1 inches with a total rainfall of 4.3 inches. The driest division is the west central where rainfall averaged 2.5 inches—about .8 below normal.” Schaal said the scattered nature of the showers caused soil moisture conditions to "vary greatly.” The weekly crop report showed that while the showers during the week were "very beneficial to the areas that received them they were too spotty to increase moisture levels for the state.'* "In areas not receiving showers. soil moisture supplies dropped from last week, with deficiencies reported in nearly all areas of the state. Both topsoil and subsoil moisture are rated mostly short, with a decrease in moisture supplies noted from the previous week.
"Pasture condition reflected the decline in moisture and was rated mostly poor to fair by the weekend, the same rating as the previous week."

WASHINGTON UPI — President Johnson, in a quiet backseat thus far in Luci’s wedding plans, is telling friends he is “looking forward to welcoming Pat into the family.” “Especially,” the President has quipped “into family discussions where I’ve been outnumbered.” Watching the frenzied preparations from the sidelines, the
father of the bride has confided to those close to him: “I think this is Luci’s time—not mine. “All I want for my girls is their happiness,” he continues. “As far as Luci is concerned all you have to do is talk to Pat and Luci to know they are happy.” The President, who will escort his daughter down the 352-foot aisle Saturday at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, wanted Luci, 19, to have the kind of wedding every girl dreams about. Luci planned it big and he let
her have her way. "After all j
she is the first chick to fly the
coop,” explained an aide. The wedding news at times
seems to take precedence over the big international and national events. The President has shared in some of the family consultations, but he has writhed at any thought that the wedding, a national news event, would turn into a spectacular.
Sometimes he has had to ride
herd to keep it a “family and friends” affairs. But Johnson himself is a ‘y’ll come” man
and noted for his hospitality.
