(Takra fraa tke FUm Ut Tht Daily Banner. Week ef Jnly 31. 1*U> As the weather is the main topic for us, people in the good old days suffered, too: “Not content with breaking the heat record for the summer Thursday with a temperature of 102 degrees, the weatherman posted a new mark again today by going still higher. At 2:30 o’clock today the government instrument at the home of J. P. Allen registered 101 degrees. At the same time yesterday the thermometer registered 100 degrees. The highest temperature for today was expected to be about 104 or 105 degrees.”

‘‘According to Gardner Brothers, the Greencastle ice dealers, the demand for ice in Greencastle now is greater than it has ever been in the history of their business in Greencastle. Besides disposing of the total output of their ice plant, which is seven tons daily, they are receiving each day a carload of ice from Terre Haute. These cars contain from 20 to 25 tons of ice.”

I wonder . . . “The secret of the dance craze has been unearthed. It’s the “dance bug” and has been discovered by W. B. Herms, professor of parisitology at the University of California. He calls it the spynose nymph. Such a curious little insect with such a peculiar little effect has never before been heard of in the scientific world. For several years farmers of California and other sub-tropical parts of the United States have been bothered by the strange and unaccountable antics of their cattle. Cows were often prone to tango up a hill or perform a spirited maxixe. Servants were unable to explain this mystifying phenomenon until recently when it was found that the spynose ear tick was responsible. The tick causes a rhythmic tapping in the ear and a sort of syncopation. It is covered with spines which are thin and wiry. The air circulating through these often results in vague melodic tones. The music, combined with the ragtime tappings, caused the wild eavortings of the cattle. The “dance bug” has thrived well in California and not only contaminates cattle, but poultry and chickens. Lastly, man has become the prey of this evil insect and several cases have been reported to Professor Herms.”

Tunnel To Save Historic Gap
WASHINGTON UPI — Kentucky Highway Commissioner Henry Ward says he is confident that a tunnel will be built to save historic Cumberland Gap from the devastation of

through the gap.
