Study Use of Hudear Power To Destroy Asteroid Icarus
SYDNEY, Australia UPI—A Sydney University physicist said today the United States, Britain and Russia are studying the possibility of using a nuclear rocket to prevent an asteroid from smashing into earth. Prof. Stuart Thomas Butler said any microscopic deviation in the orbit of the asteroid Icarus could put it on a collision course with earth, causing “a colossal force impact of great Presents Mew Cigarette Bill WASHINGTON UPI — Sen. Warren G. Magnuson introduced a bill that would require cigarette manufacturers to list the amount of tar and nicotine produced by their product—marking the first anniversary of a congressional requirement for a health warning on cigarette packs. Magnuson conceded that his bill might not be considered until the next session of Congress. He said he hoped its introduction might bring voluntary action in the industry to list tar and nicotine content, keeping Congress out of the matter. The Washington Democrat also asked the Federal Trade Commission to give the Senate Commerce Committee a quarterly report listing the comparative tar and nicotine ratings of all major cigarettes. Despite the health warning on cigarette packs, Magnuson said that an overwhelming majority of those who smoked a year ago are still puffing away.
destruction” equal to the power of 1,000 hydrogen bombs. An asteroid is a small planet with a diameter ranging from a fraction of a mile to nearly 500 miles. Butler, a 44-year-old professor of theoretical physics at Sydney University, said Icarus is nearly a mile wide and presently is on a “near collision" course with earth. It will pass within four million miles of earth in June, 1968, he said. He said it could reduce any of the world’s major cities to rubble in a flash if it diverged only slightly from its present course. However, he said, scientists in the United States, Britain and Russia are Investigating how they can land a rocket on Icarus and smash the asteroid to smithereens by using a nuclear warhead. “This is where the billions of dollars spent on space research and soft landings on the moon could pay off," he said.
Indiana Traffic Tell Mow 843 Indiana’s 1966 traffic fatality toll, boosted by a double-death collision in Jennings County Wednesday, climbed to at least 843 today, compared with 776 a year ago. Vernis Adams, 65, North Vernon, and Linda Adams, 11, Bedford, were killed when the car in which they were riding collided with a State Highway Department paint truck on U.S. 50 east of Hayden in Jennings County. State police said the car, driven by Mrs. Gertrude Adams, North Vernon, veered when she saw the truck in her lane. Police said the truck was driven by Guy Weekly, 57, R.R. 1, Norman. Paint from the truck spilled onto the highway and later burned. Don Wright, 15, Milan, was killed Wednesday when his motorcycle collided with the rear of a truck in his hometown. Theodore Garz, 58, South Bend, died in a South Bend hospital from injuries received Tuesday night when struck by a car in downtown South Bend.
iosf Pilot Aided By Flares, Lights MONTICELLO, UPI — Bartholomen Brooks, 29, North Miami, Fla., made an emergency landing at Monticello Airport Tuesday night with red flares and headlights from police cars guiding him to safety. Brooks was en route to Valparaiso from Parkersburg, W. Va., on a business trip when he lost his way in a storm near Valparaiso. He said he flew around for a time and contacted St. Joseph County Airport at South Bend by radio, asking for directions.
Praises Teomwork WASHINGTON UPI — Whitney M. Young Jr., director of the National Urban League, told President Johnson Tuesday he found “interracial teamwork unprecedented in history” among U. S. troops in Viet Nam. Reporting on a battlefront tour. Young said he did not believe that Negro casualty rates and assignment to dangerous missions were disproportionately higher than among white, as some Negro leaders have claimed. But he said there were some “serious questions" about officer promotion practices.

S. Viet Leader Discusses War SAIGON UPI — South Vietnamese Premier Nguyen Cao Ky said today the quickest way to end the war is to invade North Viet Nam and “destroy their sanctuary.” The only other way to win the war in Viet Nam, Ky said, would be to wait for the North Vietnamese people to overthrow their Communist regime and this might take five to 15 years. The government chief aired his views and answered questions at a news conference.
of an expanding marketing program of the Indiana Agricultural Marketing Association, an affiliate of the Indiana Farm Bureau. Experimental shipments were sent last September to Britain to determine the best methods of packing and transporting the com. The first shipment of the Jackson County sweet com, amounting to about five tons, will be trucked to the Harmon Co., at Maywood, to be hydrocolled. It will be located in ice for a truck trip to New York where it will be loaded aboard a ship for a nine-day Atlantic voyage. Robert Brenneman of the Association said more shipments of sweet com are expected to be sent during the season, possibly as much as 20 tons per week. Brenneman said the Association is cooperating with the Illinois., Producers International, Inc., and the Quality Vegetable Growers Association, “in creating and developing new mar- | kets for Midwest products."
Stabbing Occurs On IU Campus BLOOMINGTON, UPI— Two special students from Saudi Arabia argued violently in their native language Wednesday in a special class in English for foreigners at Indiana University, and one of them was stabbed.
