Escaped Navy Pilot Identified WASHINGTON UPI — The Defense Department Wednesday made public the identity of a Navy pilot who escaped from his North Vietnamese captors after being held prisoner for five months. He is Lt. jg. Dieter Dengler, 28, Pacifica, Calif. It was disclosed Monday that Dengler— not identified until now—had become the first prisoner to escape from a North Vietnamese prison. A Pentagon spokesman said “security requirements prevent the release of any details at this time,’’ on how Dengler managed to elude his captors. From other sources, however, is was learned that Dengler, during his imprisonment, had lost 40 pounds while on a meager diet of plain rice. He escaped with another American and lived off the land while making their way back to Allied lines. Communist soldiers finally caught up with them. Dengler managed to hide but his companion was captured and beheaded on the spot Twenty-three days after the escape, American planes saw Dengler waving a white doth and an “SOS” laid out on the ground with stones. He was then picked up by a helicopter.
