Five hundred cheerleaders from 100 schools in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio spent a week at Vincennes University attending the High School Summer Cheerleaders Workshop. Merle Tyler, clinic director of the National Cheerleaders Association, was in charge of instruction, assisted by college cheerleaders from eight states who taught new yells and routines. Coach Doug Adams, Michigan City “Indiana Coach of the Year,” visited the workshop and talked to the cheerleaders on school spirit and the Importance of cheerleading to the team.

Quarter-Finals CHICAGO UPI — Defending champion Barbara Fay Boddie beat Marcella Rose 6 and 5 Thursday in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Western Amateur Golf Championship. Miss Boddie, who said she feels the pressure of trying to defend her title two years in a row, faced Jane Huntsberger, 17, in the semifinals today. Miss Huntsberger, who will be a freshman at Arizona State University this fall, beat Bobbie Jo Gabrielson in the quarterfinals, 3 and 2. The other semifinal match pitted Peggy Conley, 19, the former junior champion, against Sharon Moran, 23. Miss Moran beat Paulette Erickson 5 and 4 in the quarterfinals.

Park Board Sets Rules For Greencastle Swim Team

Several persons interested in the City Swim Team met with the Park Board and after a discussion it was decided that the Park Board should set up a list of rules for the operation of a swim team. A copy of the rules that were established as a result of this meeting are as follows. 1. The swim team coach will be directly responsible to the Pool Manager or, in his absence, to the Assistant Pool Manager. 2. The swim team coach will be selected on a yearly basis. Selection will be by the Pool Manager and approved by the Park Board. 8. Written permission from the parents releasing the pool management, Park Board, City of Greencastle, and anyone else connected with the swim team from

any liability for injuries received during swim team activities, must be in the hands of the Pool Manager before anyone is allowed to participate in any swim activity. 4. Instructors and swim team members only will be allowed inside the pool area during practice. 5. The local swim meet schedule must be approved by the Pool Manager before the final of each meet is set. 6. At the completion of the first week of practice, all swimmers must be able to swim their competition distance or be eliminated. 7. All swim team members must follow all rules set up by the Pool Manager and the swim team coach. 8. The swim team shall be self-supporting. Any solicitations must be made in the name of the Greencastle City Swim Team. 9. The swim team will be responsible for obtaining their own awards. 10. Any unforseen problems not covered by these rules will be decided by the Pool Manager, subject to approval by the Park Board.

Hoosler Golfers Off The Pace AKRON, Ohio UPI—Hoosier golfers were well off the pace after the first round Thursday of the PGA Golf Championship here. Bob Verwey, a native of South Africa now playing out of Indianapolis, had the best round among the Indiana entries, carding a six-over par 76. He trailed the leaders. Sam Snead and A1 Geiberger, by 8 strokes. Bob Hamilton of Evansville, the national PGA titlist in 1944 fired an 80. Ed Kynch, Indianapolis, the current state PGA champion, carded an 83. Ron Demao of Richmond had an 82. Joe Campbell, formerly of Anderson, and Arnold Koehler of Connersville, withdrew from the tourney.

U.S. Team Wins Shooting Title WIESBADEN, Germany — UPI — The United States has clinched the team title in the 39th World Shooting championships on the strength of a rec-ord-breaking performance by Gary Anderson. Anderson broke his own world mark in the combined three-po-sition championship through Thursday by scoring 1,156 points of a possible 1,200. The Topeka, Kan., marksman then combined with three teammates to help the U. S. win the three-posi-tion free rifle team event. John Forster of Columbus, Ga., also broke a world record Thursday, hitting 391 of a possible 400 points in the kneeling position free rifle competition. The old mark of 388 was held by Sweden’s Anders Kvissberg.
