Anti-Red Purge Ordered By Tito BELGRADE UPI — Officials acting on President Tito’s demands for a purge of anticommunist elements have dismissed the top two men in the Serbian Republic’s Ministry of Interior — the administrative arm of the secret police, it was -announced. _ Ousted were Zivotije SavicSrba, secretary of the interior •for the Serbian Republic, and „his deputy, Dragoslav Novakovic. The Serbian Republic is the biggest of Yugoslavia’s six states.
The ouster was ordered by the republic’s executive council and followed the ouster Thursday of Aledsaner Rankovic as vice president and number two man to Tito, and the federal 1 secret police chief Svetislav j Stefanovic. Tito called for the purge after it became known that secret police were tapping telephone lines of high officials and otherwise spying on them. In a speech at today’s Serbian council meeting President Dragi Stamenkovic promised a partial dismantling of the republic’s huge security apparatus. “We now have too large an I apparatus.” he said. “Its huge isize, in relation to the needs of

our democratic society, has always represented a potential danger. . . .” The two men named to take over the security functions in Serbia were Slavko Aecevic and Stevan Puvalic, both with no former police experience. Canada Conducts Peace Feelers LONDON UPI— Canada, a member of the International Control Commission ICC for Viet Nam was reported conducting a peace initiative behind the scenes in Hanoi, Peking and Moscow. The moves, understood to have begun earlier this year in low level soundings, were said to be continuing through various channels independently of current British and other peace efforts. Unlike Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s much publicized new Viet Nam peace bid and Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi’s latest appeal in Moscow, Canada is saying nothing publicly. To date the efforts apparent ly have produced no concrete results. Wilson is flying to Moscow 1
Saturday to try to get tHe Russians to help reconvening the 1954 Geneva Conference that settled the Indochina war. Moscow is cochairman with Britain of the Geneva conference. The Russians already have indicated they ■will refuse, turning down Mrs. Gandhi’s appeal for such a new peace conference.
North Viet Hit Hard By Yanks SAIGON UPI — American warplanes dodged heavy flak and SAM missiles Friday to wage the largest air strike against targets in North Viet Nam, U.S. spokesmen said today. Air Force and Navy planes, flying a record 121 missions, struck military, communications and transport targets in the raids. One U.S. plane was reported lost. The spokesmen said North Vietnamese ground positions fired a barrage of 10 Sovietsupplied missiles in a fruitless attack on a single flight of U.S. Navy jets near Hanoi during the raids. As the air war intensified, the
Communist Viet Cong took to the offensive today on the ground only four miles from Saigon. In fighting heard clearly in the capital, an estimated 100 guerrillas shot their way through a South Vietnamese police company guarding a vital military highway between Saigon and the suburban headquarters of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division in Thu Doc. The guerrillas swept through a small police station and nearby combat police positions before being beaten off. Police casualties were described as “moderate.”

City Library Adds New Books The Greencastie -Putnam County Library has recently added two books which should be of interest to all readers. They are, “Death of the Sweet Waters,” by Donald Carr and “Disaster by Default,” by Frank Graham. Mr. Carr says there is not a fresh-water shortage in the United States, but that there is an acute shortage of intelligent water management. Many of our large bodies of fresh water: Lake Erie, Lake Michigan, Merrimack River, Hudson River, are so polluted that even with a program of total pollution-control, it would take years to clean them up. Our wildlife, our streams and lakes and beaches and drinking water are being destroyed, not by drought, but by our own carelessness in not demanding a proper sewage system. Mr. Graham tells in “Disaster by Default,” how our national water resources have been exploited by a few because of public apathy and ineffectual legis-
lation.
He describes conditions caused by wastes and pollution flowing

into lakes and rivers across the country and some of the actions taken by the United States Government. His information is documented by material from the files of the Public Health Service, the Department of the Interior,,
Congressional Committees, State and Municipal Agencies and private interviews. A list of State Water Pollution Control Agencies is given in an appendix of this book. These books present some challenging reading.
