Sheinwold On Bridge

Prefer Two Lines To Single Chance By Alfred Sheinwold One way to play a difficult hand is to stand or fall on the position of the cards. A better way Is to give the opponents their chance to make a mistake, particularly if you can still make the square play if the opponents fail to roll over and play dead for you. South dealer Both sides vulnerable NORTH 4 QJ62 J« O AK7 * 6532 WEST EAST * 107 4$ 954 V K 10 93 VA854 0 864 O QI 103 * QJ 10 8 *97 SOUTH * A K 8 3 V Q7 2 O 952 * AK4 Sooth West North East 1 NT Pass 2 * Pass 2 * Pass 4 * All Pass Opening lead — * Q South won the first trick with the king of clubs and drew three rounds of trumps. Then he cashed the ace of clubs and gave up a club, hoping that each opponent started with three clubs. Unfortunately for South, the clubs failed to break favorably. West took the third club and shifted to diamonds at once. The defenders got in twice with hearts, once to knock out the other top diamond and the other time to cash a diamond trick. That was the end for South. South should begin with just two rounds of trumps, the ace and dummy’s queen. Then he leads the jack at hearts from dummy. PROBABLE RESULT If East happens to have the ace at hearts he will probably play low on dummy’s jack hop-

Tht Daily Banner, Greencastle, Indiana Friday, July 15, 1966

ing his partner has the queen of hearts and that South will take a finesse to it This will force West to take the king of hearts. Declarer wins the diamond return in dummy and leads the other heart through the ace. This sets up the queen of hearts in the South hand. Declarer takes the next diamond in dummy, gets to his hand with the king of trumps and cashes the queen of hearts to discard dummy’s losing diamond. The rest is easy. If the Lrst heart trick doesn’t satisfy South he can draw the third round of trumps and switch to clubs. The point is that the deceptive heart play gives South an extra chance and costs nothing. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one spade, and the next player passes. You hold: S-10 7; H-K 10 9 3; D-8 6 4; C-Q J 10 8. What do you say?
