Filipinos Bugged By Beatles MANILA UPI — Irate Filipinos today cursed, booed and shoved the Beatles around in a rough-and-tumble sendoff to the mo-haired singers at the Manila International Airport. The incident apparently was triggered by what the Filipino press described as a “snub” of the president’s wife by the Beatles who failed to show up at a scheduled appointment: Monday. The British group and mem-1 bers of their party were al- i lowed to leave the country only after the Filipino prompters of their show here settled a tax case. The Philippine government said the singers would not be permitted to depart until they secured a tax clearance. Their departure was in sharp contrast to their arrival here Sunday. Then, they were given a rip - roaring welcome by thousands of fans and protection by a strong security force. Monday they failed to show up for a lunch date with Mrs. Ferdinanc Marcos, wife of the president. The Philippine first lady had invited about 200 youngsters to the presidential palace to greet the singers. After waiting for about an hour, she walked out, saying she had “no more time to receive them” and confiding that her own children preferred the Rolling Stones, a rival beat
group.
Pecayo, when asked whether the tax case had anything to do with Monday’s incident, re-
plied:
“Certainly not. All foreign entertainers who come here and make money are required to declare their income and to secure a tax clearance.” The Beatles gave two shows

Jap Fears
KYOTO, Japan UPI — U. S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk sought to ease Japanese fears today that the escalating war in Viet Nam might lead to a broader Asian conflict. Rusk, here with four other American cabinet secretaries for the fifth annual three-day U.S.-Japan economic conference launched into a spirited defense of U. S. policy in Viet Nam at both the opening ceremonies and the first
private session.
There has been a great deal of anxiety in Japan over the past year and a half of North Viet Nam. and the tension was heightened after the U.S. struck

oil depots on the outskirts of Hanoi and Haiphong last Wednesday. About 5,000 leftist demonstrators showed up at nearby Osaka airport Monday night to protest U.S. policy when Rusk arrived, and several thousand more appeared at the entrance to a four-mile roadway leading to the brand new mountainside meeting hall where the conference opened today. Even the Japanese government, normally pro-American, was known to be upset by the Hanoi-Haiphong bombings. Japan’s fears center around the possibility of the Viet Nam con-
flict expanding into a general Asian war that could drag this country in. During the opening ceremonies Rusk said: “We hope that the North Vietnamese will agree to talk about peace as we and many other nations have long urged.”
